End-of-Life Announcement for Cisco ONS 15800/15801
Control and Monitoring Processors
Cisco ONS 15800 Software Releases 1.4 and 1.5, and Cisco ONS 15801 Software Releases 1.2 and 1.3
Cisco Systems® announces the end of life for the Cisco® ONS 15800 and 15801 control and monitoring processors, Cisco ONS 15800 Software Release 1.4 and 1.5, and Cisco ONS 15801 Software Release 1.2 and 1.3. The last day to order these products is July 31, 2003. Customers will continue to receive support from the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) until July 31, 2008. Table 1 describes the end-of-life milestones, definitions, and dates.
Cisco ONS 15800 and 15801 control and monitoring processor modules CMP-W (obsolete) can be replaced with modules CMP-W-2E (new). The CMP-W-2E module offers improved performances, reliability, and operability.
On the software side, CMP-W-2E can be managed only by software release higher than 1.5 for ONS 15800 and higher than 1.3 for ONS 15801. ONS 15800 Software Release 1.4 and 1.5 and ONS 15801 Software Release 1.2 and 1.3 end of life is justified by the availability of at least three consequent network releases that dramatically increase the manageability and the operability of ONS 15800/ONS 15801 Cisco DWDM systems.

Product Migration Options
CMP-W-2E units can replace CMP-W module. A replacement may take place in a straightforward manner under the following conditions:
1. Customers may replace ONS 15800 and ONS 15801 rack-kits in which CMP-W is installed with CMP-W-2E if the product was shipped after November 30, 2001. Customers that received products prior to this date will need to complete a recabling procedure in order to facilitate the installation of the CMP-W-2E in place of CMP-W. Detailed info on the necessary recabling procedure can be found in the CNU Manual in the Upgrade Hardware section at the following URL:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/ong/15800/hwcomp/198701.pdf
2. In order to properly manage the CMP-W-2E module, ONS 15800 customers must use a software release higher than or equal to Software Release 1.6 and ONS 15801 customers must use Software Release 1.4. Customers can review detailed info about software upgrade procedures in the CNU Manual at the following URL:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/ong/15800/hwcomp/198701.pdf
In cases of software upgrades, it is necessary to check if a new release is completely backwards-compatible with the installed base. It is possible to analyze and confirm software backwards-compatibility by checking the software/firmware backwards-compatibility matrix that is available at the following URL:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/127/ONS_15800/sw_fw_matrix.pdf
Cisco strongly suggests, in a case of migration, to upgrade to the latest software release: ONS 15800 Release 2.1 and ONS 15801 Release 2.1. Another important consideration is the Cisco Transport Manager (CTM) compatibility compared to the ONS 15800/ONS 15801 software release.
CTM Release 4.0 will support only Release 2.0 and Release 2.1 of the ONS 15800 and ONS 15801 platforms.
