End-of-Sale and End-of-Life Announcement for the


Cisco ONS 15800 and ONS 15801 DWDM Platforms


Cisco Systems® announces the end of life of the Cisco® ONS 15800 and ONS 15801 DWDM platforms. The last day to order the products is March 17, 2004. Customers will continue to receive support from the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) until March 17, 2009. Table 1 describes the end-of-life milestones, definitions, and dates for the affected products.

Customers may consider migrating to the Cisco ONS 15454 Multiservice Transport Platform (MSTP) for metropolitan, regional, and long-haul applications. The Cisco ONS 15454 MSTP provides improvements in performance, reliability, scalability, and operability. For more information about upgrade and migration plans, read the Product Migration Options section near the end of this bulletin.

End-of-sale date

The last date to order the product through Cisco point-of-sale mechanisms. The product is no longer for sale after this date.

Last shipment date

The last-possible ship date that can be requested of Cisco and/or its contract manufacturers. Actual ship date is dependent on lead time.

June 17, , 2004

End of software maintenance releases date

The last date that Cisco Engineering may release any final software maintenance releases or bug fixes. After this date, Cisco Engineering will no longer develop, repair, maintain, or test the product software.

March 17, 2005

End of new service attachment date

For equipment and software that is not covered by a service-and-support contract, this is the last date to order a new service-and-support contract or add the equipment and/or software to an existing service-and-support contract.

March 17, 2005

End of service contract renewal date

The last date to extend or renew a service contract for the product. The extension or renewal period cannot extend beyond the last date of support.

December 17, 2008

Last date of support

The last date to receive service and support for the product. After this date, all support services for the product are unavailable, and the product becomes obsolete.

Product Migration Options

There are different options to guarantee smooth migration for Cisco customers.

For metro/regional and long-haul applications, the new Cisco ONS 15454 MSTP platform is available. It offers more client interfaces and next-generation OAM&P functions. For information, refer to:

For upgrading the already installed routes there are two possibilities:

  • Place a last buy before the end-of-sale date to cover expected wavelength forecast
  • Use Cisco ONS 15454 transponder card. Proposed solution suggests to use Cisco ONS 15454 shelf to host MultiRate transponder at 2.5 Gbps or at 10 Gbps as well as 4 x 2.5-Gbps muxponder to interface directly with Cisco ONS 15800 or ONS 15801 optical platform. In fact a pass-through card is orderable and will be orderable; its function is to interconnect the front-coming cables directly to the E2K connections placed on the back-panel multiplexers.

This will allow using on Cisco ONS15800 or ONS 15801 platform for all the additional features supported by ONS 15454 transponder platform.
