The Cisco Nexus® 2000 Series Fabric Extenders and 5000 Series Switches deliver an innovative architecture to simplify data center transformation by enabling a high-performance, standards-based Ethernet unified fabric.
The Cisco Nexus 2000 and 5000 Series both use Small Form-Factor Pluggable Plus (SFP+) 10 Gigabit Ethernet interconnects, which can provide 10 Gigabit Ethernet support in either copper or fiber media (Figure 1).

Twinax Cable Support Algorithm on Cisco Nexus 2000 and 5000 Series
Starting with Cisco NX-OS Software Release 4.1(3)N2.1, the following algorithm is used while detecting SFP+ twinax cables on Cisco Nexus 2000 and 5000 Series switches:
If the attached interconnect (transceiver) is a twinax cable, then verify that the transceiver SPROM matches the Cisco code. If the check succeeds, then bring up the interface; else check whether the vendor part number has been certified. If the vendor part number is certified, bring up the interface; else print a warning message stating that a third-party transceiver is attached, as shown here, and try to bring up the port:
2009 Oct 9 01:46:42 switch %ETHPORT-3-IF_NON-CISCO_TRANSCEIVER: Non-Cisco transceiver on interface Ethernet1/18 is detected
Cisco Service and Support
If a customer has a valid support contract for Cisco Nexus Family switches, the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) will support twinax cables that are part of the compatibility matrix for the respective switches. However, if the twinax cables are not purchased through Cisco, the customer cannot get a return material authorization (RMA) to send these cables to Cisco for replacement.
If a twinax cable that is not part of the compatibility matrix is connected into a system, Cisco TAC will still debug the problem provided that the customer has a valid support contract for the switches. However, Cisco TAC may ask the customer to replace the cables with Cisco qualified cables if the cables may be faulty, or Cisco TAC may direct the customer to the cable provider for support. Cisco TAC cannot issue an RMA for replacement of uncertified cables.
