Cisco ONS 15400 Series

Product Improvement for ONS 15454E Power Cable

Product Bulletin No. 543060

This bulletin serves to inform customers and partners about a product improvement that Cisco made on the ONS 15454E power cables. Because the ground wire was unnecessary, it has been removed from the cable itself. Cisco is currently shipping ONS 15454E power cables with two wires instead of three, without any functionality change. The resulting cable better reflects the installation manual.

Upgrade Paths

New power cables with two wires can be used, without any change, where the older cables with three wires were used. Interoperability is maintained.
The ground has to be connected to the chassis, as illustrated in the customer installation and upgrade manual, so the ground wire in the cable is unnecessary.
Figure 1 is an extract from the installation procedure, showing where the actual ground has to be connected.

Figure 1. Ground Wire Connection to Chassis

Connecting the third wire in the cable, where present, may lead to a voltage differential between the two grounds. This connection must be avoided, as the Caution in the installation manual notes:
Caution    If you have a cable with three wires, do not use the yellow and green conductor wire for secondary grounding. The yellow and green conductor wire is removed in the recent version of the cable.
