Metro Edge Solution for Wireline Carriers

Introduction

Metro Edge Networking Solutions

Metro Edge networks connect users to the larger public network. The emphasis here is on service variety, scalable bandwidth and customer response. As customer LANs increase in speed and complexity, Wireline Carriers are called on to improve service quality and availability while delivering new types of high-bandwidth services to customer sites. The business challenge is in finding ways to satisfy the diverse customer demands while making a rapid payback on new investments that result in profitable growth.

Customer local-area networks (LANs) connect through service access points in office buildings, campuses, and curbsides. Today, most LANs are local in name only, because a LAN may connect many sites through high-speed services in the public network. For enterprise customers, the key concern is the availability of affordable high-speed services that satisfy their overall communications requirements.

Cisco optical products include multiservice provisioning platforms (MSPPs) targeted at enterprise access points as well as the metro edge and interoffice facilities. Cisco Multiservice Optical solutoins support DS1, DS3, EC1, OC-3/3c, OC-12/12c, OC-48/48c, and OC-192/192c TDM services, and data services ranging from 10/100-Mbps to Gigabit and 10-Gigabit Ethernet. Storage area networks (SANs) with Enterprise System Connection (ESCON), fiber connection (FICON), fibre channel, and other requirements can be fully accommodated, along with voice, video, and data traffic, at any level that the enterprise needs. Wireline Carriers can use MSPPs throughout the network and can upgrade any service with a single card addition, saving inventory, maintenance, and training costs.
