Direction Changer Description

Warning These interfaces are designed for use as intra-building interfaces only (Type 2 or Type 4 ports as described in GR-1089-CORE, Issue 4) and require isolation from the exposed OSP cabling. The intra-building port(s) of the equipment or subassembly must not be metallically connected to interfaces that connect to the OSP or its wiring. The addition of Primary Protectors is not sufficient protection in order to connect these interfaces metallically to OSP wiring.

The direction changer allows you to reverse the exit direction of the DS-1 cable connections installed on the backplane of the ONS 15310-MA chassis. This is useful when you install two ONS 15310-MA chassis side-by-side in a single 23-inch rack.

Note You cannot install two ONS 15310-MA chassis side-by-side in a 19-inch rack.

The DS-1 cables exit to the right on the A side and to the left on the B side of the backplane when installed in the standard manner (Figure 1). This causes the DS-1 cables in the middle to interfere, if you install two chassis side-by-side in a rack. The direction changer raises the height of the DS-1 connector on the backplane and reverses the exit direction of the cables to avoid interference.

Install the Direction Changer on the ONS 15310-MA

Step 1 Place the male connector of the direction changer over the desired BIC connector (A side or B side) on the backplane (Figure 2).

Note If you want the DS-1 cables to exit from the right, place the direction changer on the B side of the backplane. If you want the DS-1 cables to exit from the left, place the direction changer on the A side of the backplane.

Step 2 Tighten the two male/female thread hexagonal standoffs of the direction changer on to the hexagonal standoffs near the BIC connector (Figure 2).

Step 3 Place the male BIC cable connector on the female connector of the direction changer and tighten the connector screws on to the two male/female thread hexagonal standoffs of the direction changer (Figure 2).

Figure 3 shows the direction changer installed on the B side of the backplane, Figure 4 shows the direction changer installed on the A side of the backplane, and Figure 5 shows the direction changer installed on two chassis placed side-by-side.
