Problem Description

Cisco 12000 Engine0 6 and 12 port E3-SMB, and 6 and 12 port DS3-SMB-B line cards experience repeated random BMA memory errors.

Note: The non -B versions 12DS3-SMB= and 6DS3-SMB= of these line cards did not use the memory component covered by this field notice and are not covered within its scope.

Background

This problem has been isolated to the SDRAM vendor part number SM57204807CISCAOF0 that resides on 6E3-SMB, 12E3-SMB, 6DS3-SMB-B and 12DS3-SMB-B Engine0 line cards matching the 800 Top Assembly Numbers (TAN) noted in the Products Affected section of this Field Notice.

Customers experiencing this problem will see a combination of the following error messages at random intervals:

  • %LC-3-BMAERRSS: ToFab BMA SDRAM data error 8 in address 20E0F1
  • %LC-3-BMAERR: ToFab BMA error: msstat 440340B2 dma0 0 dma1 800 dma2 0 qm 1FFFF8 plim 0 fia 0 l3 0 ms 0 sdram 8

  • %LC-3-BMAERR: ToFab BMA error: msstat 440340B2 dma0 0 dma1 800 dma2 0 qm 1FFFF8 plim 0 fia 0 l3 0 ms 0 sdram 10
  • %GSR-3-INTPROC: Process
  • %FIA-3-PARITYERR: To Fabric parity error was detected. BMA/CSAR parity error interrupt = 0x1.

Problem Symptoms

Cisco 12000 Engine0 6 or 12 port E3-SMB and DS3-SMB-B line cards can experience multiple random BMA errors when specific vendor SDRAM memory part number SM57204807CISCAOF0 is present on these line cards.

This can cause temporary traffic outages on the Engine 0 line card experiencing this problem.

Workaround/Solution

This Field Notice is limited in scope to Engine 0 6E3-SMB, 12DS3-SMB-B, 6DS3-SMB-B and 12E3-SMB line cards with SDRAM vendor part number SM57204807CISCAOF0.

Workaround:

There is no software workaround for this problem.

Cisco recommends a fix-on-fail strategy for this problem.

As of approximately July 21 2005, new products that were manufactured under Engineering Change Order (ECO) E082723 and E083037 are guaranteed to be free of this problem. Refer to How to Identify Hardware Levels below for instructions on how to view the version of in-service product.

Although an upgrade program had previously been provided to replace potentially affected but otherwise working product, the upgrade program is now over and Cisco will only replace product which has actually failed. The standard RMA process should be used to replace failed product.

How To Identify Hardware Levels

There are two ways to identify affected Engine0 DS3 and E3 line cards:

  1. Physically look at the SDRAM on the card to verify the memory vendor part number matches SM57204807CISCAOF0. This requires the line card be removed from the chassis.
  2. Use show diag output to identify part, TAN and 73 level IDs that match those in the parts list of this field notice. This can be performed via telnet into the Cisco 12000 without further impact to network traffic.
