Field Notice: Upgrading and/or Uninstalling MeetingPlace SMTP Gateway Can Cause the File 'MPNotifyPerf.dll' to Lock Up

Problem Description

When upgrading and/or uninstalling the MeetingPlace SMTP Gateway, sometimes the file MPNotifyPerf.dll locks up and cannot be overwritten or removed. This presents a problem because there is a possibility that an older version of the MPNotifyPerf.dll could be running against a newer version of SMTP Gateway. There is no definite way to determine the side effects of running different versions and the problems could vary depending on the scenario.

Problem Symptoms

MeetingPlace SMTP Gateway will process the first notification, but every subsequent notification will fail. Every time the SMTP and Notification services are restarted, only the first notification will be processed successfully.


It is recommended, not to perform any upgrades from one version to the next. The current version of the SMTP Gateway should be uninstalled prior to any new installation taking place. This can be accomplished through the Add/Remove programs function in the Control Panel. The following steps should be followed prior to uninstalling the SMTP Gateway software:

  1. The notification templates must be backed up.

  2. Once the uninstall is complete, you will not be prompted to reboot the system, but it is very important that a manual reboot of the machine is performed. Rebooting the machine unlocks the MPNotifyPerf.dll file and allows the uninstall wizard to remove all the related files.

  3. Please ensure the following directories and contents have been removed, if not, manually delete them before proceeding.

    [drive]:\Latitude\MeetingPlace Email-Gateway 
    [drive]:\Latitude\Shared Components\MeetingPlace Notification Gateway 

    Now it's safe to install the new version of MeetingPlace SMTP Gateway.
