Problem Description

Cisco 12xxx PRP-2 route processor loaded with rommon version 0.67 (1.7dev) can not read the first file on Disk 0 and fails to auto-boot.

The following error string is displayed:
boot: cannot determine first executable file name on device "disk0:"

Background

PRP-2= route processors require rommon version 2.83 (1.8dev) or later to auto boot properly. When an earlier version of rommon is loaded on a PRP-2= it will encounter read errors.

The PRP-2 serial numbers listed within this field notice shipped with rommon version 0.67(1.7dev), and are susceptible to this problem.

Problem Symptoms

PRP-2= route processor with rommon version 0.67 will not complete the auto-boot process.

The rommon version 0.67 is not a Cisco qualified image and must be upgraded.

Workaround/Solution

Customers can use the following options for upgrading the ROMMON on PRP-2=:

Option#1 (upgrade utility for pcmcia):
  1. Contact the Cisco TAC to receive a copy of the rommon upgrader v83. It is located off the Cisco 12000 Internal Support web pages.
  2. Copy the upgrader utility bfprp_romupgrade-1.8.2.83 to your pcmcia flash disk.
  3. Set the config-register on your PRP-2 to 0x0.
  4. From rommon prompt, boot the upgrader image from the pcmcia disk.

Note: If you want to load an IOS image on the router after upgrading the rommon, include a boot system command in running-config so that there is no auto boot of the upgrader on disk0.
Example:
Router#show disk0:
-#- --length-- ---------date/time--------- path
1 170300 Aug 01 2000 00:37:40 +00:00 bfprp_romupgrade-1.8.2.83 63746048 bytes available (172032 bytes used)

Option#2 (upgrader on tftp):

  1. Configure the line boot bootldr from IOS.
  2. Set the config-register to 0x0.
  3. From rommon prompt, boot the upgrader from tftp.
  4. After boot, reset the config-register to default 0x2102.

Note: If you want to load an IOS image on the router after upgrading the rommon, place an IOS image on disk0: to be auto-booted after returning the config-register to 0x2102.
