End-of-Sale Announcement for the Catalyst 4224

Cisco Systems is announcing the end of sale (EOS) for the Catalyst 4224 Access Gateway Switch (WS-C4224V-8FXS) and associated spares.

The Catalyst 4224 was introduced to enable deployment of IP telephony in small branch offices. As IP Telephony technology has matured, several newer platforms including the Cisco 2600XM and Cisco 3700 series platforms are now capable of performing similar functions as the Catalyst 4224. As a result, the Catalyst 4224 series is being discontinued. The suggested alternative products are detailed in Table 1.

For systems already deployed in the field, the standard Cisco support programs, as described in the following section, remain in effect. The next software release for this platform will be 12.2(13)T, but new features will not be offered on this product.

Customers may also choose to trade-in their Catalyst 4224 units for other Cisco equipment through the Cisco Technology Migration Program (TMP, http://www.cisco.com/offer/tic/TMP_PA.html).

Support Programs
EOS refers to the time when certain products are no longer available for new purchases; it does not apply to the service and support programs of the previously sold platforms. Cisco will continue to support the listed products through its SMARTnet and comprehensive maintenance programs. Customers with either of these service contracts are entitled to free software updates, 24-hour phone support through the Technical Assistance Center, and Advanced Replacement of hardware for repairs. Comprehensive maintenance customers also receive onsite service. Customers who do not have a maintenance contract can purchase software updates and hardware repair services from Cisco to meet specific requirements rather than full-service coverage. Cisco is committed to providing software support for a minimum of two years and providing hardware support for a period of five years after the EOS date. Product Substitutions.

The following section describes the Catalyst 4224 applications and the substitution options. The primary substitutes are:

  • Cisco 2650XM/2651XM + Catalyst 3524-PWR switch for similar performance and scale
  • Cisco 3700 series for higher performance and scale
