Cisco® Media Gateway Manager (MGM) a high-performance carrier-class element manager for the Cisco MGX® 8800 Media Gateway products. The Cisco MGM can deploy, configure, and manage multiple Cisco MGX 8800 Series voice gateways in one or more points of presence (POPs), providing a single interface for fault, configuration, performance, and security management.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Cisco MGM 5.0 provides a powerful range of network management capabilities, including support for network configuration, administration, fault, and performance management, and security for the Cisco MGX 8800 Series Voice Gateway products. It can operate as a standalone element management system or it can be integrated with external applications using its northbound interfaces for highly efficient flow-though operations.
Scalability-The Cisco MGM client-server architecture provides the ability to provision and manage a large number of network elements with high-performance network synchronization rates. Design and test parameters are listed in the product specifications in Table 2.

• Workflow-optimized GUI-Cisco MGM provides an advanced GUI designed to optimize daily operations for equipment provisioning to accelerate time to revenue. The workflow-optimized GUI provides several powerful advantages:

– Consolidates network monitoring tasks into a single GUI to provide alarm browsing and filtering capabilities

– Offers ability to invoke equipment diagnostics and connection tests from the configuration or network-monitoring GUI using menu shortcuts

– Provides chassis-view displays of the Cisco MGX voice gateways with real-time color-coded updates reflecting equipment status, from which the operator can directly invoke equipment diagnostics functions

– Maintains data context and provides drag-and-drop and template-based operations, minimizing operator time for data entry and object selection

• Open northbound interfaces-Cisco MGM provides open Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) northbound interfaces for inventory and event management, allowing easy integration with existing operations support systems (OSSs). Cisco MGM also provides Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)-based integration with Cisco Info Center and other SNMP managers for external fault management.

• High availability and redundancy-Cisco MGM supports a high-availability solution designed to protect against an element-management-system (EMS) failure by using the best-of-breed hardware and software products, specifically VERITAS, Oracle, and Sun. The Cisco MGM high-availability option also supports a geographically diverse configuration option that allows the active and standby servers to be separated geographically and connected over a WAN.

Network Map

The network map offers a graphical display for all network elements managed by Cisco MGM. A topology map is used to place the nodes on a user-provided background. Each user with write access can lay out a personal default map display.

Alarm Browser

Details of network alarm and configuration status can be retrieved by a single mouse click in the domain explorer GUI. Alarm filtering can be enabled with a single mouse click to view a specific class of alarms such as node, card, and port, Cisco MGM, or by the alarm's severity.

Configuration Center

The configuration center provides work-flow-oriented GUIs designed for equipment provisioning, helping enable communication with individual Cisco MGX media gateway nodes through SNMP to configure cards, lines, ports, and connections. Cisco MGM provides configuration GUIs with intuitive drag-and-drop and template-based capabilities to facilitate operator tasks. The configuration center also provides a list of inventoried data, including ports under a line or cards in a node.

Diagnostics Center

Cisco MGM Diagnostics Center provides access to all diagnostic functions based on the context of the selected managed entity. The diagnostics center provides access to all the available real-time statistics and test tools in one place, easing the task of diagnostics and troubleshooting.

Chassis View

The chassis view of the Cisco MGM allows status monitoring within seconds, providing up-to-date graphical displays of the front and back panels of the individual node. The alarm LED of each service module and physical port is automatically updated to reflect the alarm status.

Performance Management

Cisco MGM collects Cisco MGX media gateway statistics in real time and provides current and historical reports. Real-time statistics can be accessed through the diagnostics center application. Historical statistics collection is enabled through the Cisco MGM GUI. Historical statistics collected by the Cisco MGM can be retrieved in a trend analysis report. Using the Cisco Statistics Reporting Tool (SRT), the operator can select report types, including port, line, or connection level, and for the time period of interest. Cisco MGX performance reports are displayed in Cisco MGM or exported through FTP for use in other applications in .csv format. The Cisco MGM supports automatic purging of performance data based on user-specified performance management aging.

System Administration

Cisco MGM can centrally distribute Cisco MGX software upgrades. Configuration save-and-restore features save a snapshot of the entire network configuration. For network disaster recovery, operators can selectively restore configurations to a single node or to all devices being managed in the network. Manual or scheduled backup and image downloads are provided with the job monitor feature.

Security Management

Cisco MGM security features can map a user's login IDs to multiple access profiles. Created in Cisco MGM, these profiles contain read, create, delete, and modify privileges based on functional or geographic domain areas. Cisco MGM keeps an audit log of each user's Cisco MGM operations and provides a powerful administrative feature for viewing and filtering this log. It also supports upload, storage, and viewing of network element audit logs.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Cisco MGM server and client system requirements vary depending on the number of devices being managed. The Cisco MGM server is installed on the same server as a customer-provided copy of the Oracle9i database. The Cisco MGM server runs on Sun platforms that support Sun Solaris 8. The server and client system requirements are available in the Cisco MGM Installation Guide.

ORDERING INFORMATION

Cisco MGM Release 5.0 is packaged as a base software media kit with a collection of user-selectable right-to-use (RTU) add-on licensing options. Add-on licenses correspond to the specific number of Cisco MGX and client licenses needed and to advanced features such as a CORBA interface or high-availability support. Cisco MGM Software Media Kit*

The kit contains CDs with the Cisco MGM software components and online documentation. It includes one operator client RTU but does not include RTUs for the Cisco MGX chassis, CORBA, or the high-availability options.

Cisco MGX 8000 Right-to-Use License

One RTU should be ordered for each Cisco MGX chassis being managed. Each chassis type has a specific RTU.

Cisco MGM Client Right-to-Use License

Each operator station requires a unique client RTU.

Cisco MGM CORBA Interface License

This kit provides a license to use the Cisco MGM CORBA interface to communicate with a customer's other management applications using the Cisco MGM northbound CORBA interface. Only one CORBA add-on license is needed, even in Cisco MGM high-availability deployments.

Cisco MGM High-Availability License

A high-availability license allows the Cisco MGM media kit to be deployed and licensed on a second server in conjunction with additional high-availability components from Sun, Oracle, and Veritas.

* The Cisco MGM Software Media Kit does not include Oracle9i database software required for installation. Customers must provide this component, which can be acquired from their authorized Oracle sales representative.

TO DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE UPDATES

Updates and patches for current and past versions of Cisco MGM are available for download at Cisco Software Download Center. Updates are posted as they become available. Access to update downloads requires a Cisco.com login. The complete Cisco MGM product is not available for download at this time.

SERVICE AND SUPPORT

Cisco Systems ® offers software service contracts for the Cisco MGM. A service contract, purchased at the same time as the Cisco MGM is purchased, provides access to Cisco online and dial-in technical support and important product updates for the length of its entitlement period. Service contracts for the Cisco MGX 8880 Media Gateway and Cisco MGX 8850 products are purchased separately.
