Cisco Extensible Network Controller

Base Controller

Cisco XNC, which is based on OpenDaylight, addresses the evolving network requirements by providing automation and orchestration of the network fabric, and by allowing dynamic, application-based configuration of networks and services. With Cisco XNC, Cisco introduces programmability functions into the platform and software-defined networking (SDN). SDN is an approach to programmable networks that separates and abstracts some of the control-plane functions from the network devices and places them in a centralized controller.

Cisco XNC is built for extensibility using the Java Open Services Gateway initiative (OSGi) application framework. This framework provides the flexibility needed for Cisco and Cisco partners and customers to extend the functions of the controller based on business needs. Cisco XNC also provides robust northbound Representational State Transfer (REST) APIs for business applications to access and program policies.

Table 1 presents ordering information for Cisco XNC without any applications.

The base Cisco XNC product allows customers to manage a set number of devices in production.

Cisco XNC and Monitor Manager Application Bundle

Cisco XNC with the Cisco Monitor Manager application provides an SDN approach for network tapping. It replaces the purpose-built hardware matrix switches with familiar production switches and saves capital expenditures (CapEx) and operating expenses (OpEx) over time, also increasing the scalability of the solution. It also enables the controller to enforce policy in real time with an event-based approach through northbound APIs.

Cisco XNC Software Subscription

Cisco XNC Software Subscription is a product offering that allows customers to purchase major software version upgrades at reduced cost as a 1-, 2-, or 3-year subscription. A valid Cisco XNC Operate Services contract must either be in place or be purchased with the Cisco XNC software.

To order a software subscription for Cisco XNC, customers need to order based on the number of devices that they plan to manage: either the Cisco XNC base controller software or one of the bundles. For example, if the customer has purchased the Cisco XNC and Monitor Manager bundle to manage 10 devices, the equivalent 1-year subscription part number would be CON-SAU-BXNCMMS.

Table 9 summarizes the software subscriptions available and provides ordering information.
