Cisco Announces Intent to Acquire Viptela

Accelerating Next Generation SD-WAN Solutions

Press release

SAN JOSE, Calif. – On May 2, 2017, Cisco is announcing its intent to acquire Viptela, a privately-held company based in San Jose, CA that delivers cloud-first software-defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) solution.

Customers are looking to simplify how they connect and manage multiple branch offices, while lowering WAN costs and improving security with SD-WAN solutions.  SD-WAN adoption is growing quickly with IDC projecting that customer demand for SD-WAN will reach $6 billion by 2020.  Viptela is deployed in over 16,000 branch offices and Viptela’s solution has been used in some of the largest cloud-based SD-WAN customer deployments.  Its network management, orchestration and overlay technologies make it easy for customers to design, deploy and manage the WAN.

Together, Cisco and Viptela will deliver next generation SD-WAN offerings to our customers by combining the best of Viptela’s SD-WAN solution with the best of Cisco’s ISR platform and IWAN solution.  We will make significant investments to combine the technologies.

Cisco is committed to Viptela’s product offering and architecture as well as the existing Cisco Intelligent WAN (IWAN) and Meraki SD-WAN solutions.  Together we will deliver a comprehensive set of SD-WAN solutions, addressing on-premises, hybrid, and cloud-based deployments.

The acquisition of Viptela also supports Cisco’s strategic transition toward software-centric solutions that deliver predictable recurring revenue.  The Viptela team will join the Enterprise Routing team within the Networking and Security Group led by David Goeckeler.

A: Cisco’s Intelligent WAN is an on-premises SD-WAN solution based on the industry-leading ISR branch routing platform.  It is for customers who need advanced routing features, rich set of modular platforms with integrated WAN and LAN interface diversity and advanced network services.  Viptela has a cloud-first SD-WAN solution that is subscription based.  It is for customers who value granular WAN segmentation with encryption and sophisticated WAN topologies.
