Cisco provides image authentication with its various IP phone
protocols. Image authentication allows the phone to detect if the image
has been tampered with before it is programmed into the phone. If the image
fails the authentication process then the phone will reject the image.
Image authentication occurs through signed files. All Cisco 7942G and
7962G IP Phone loads are signed and can only be upgraded or downgraded to other
signed releases.
The 8.5(2) firmware uses signed (authenticated) files. This step
improves IP phone security on the Cisco IP Phone model 7942G and 7962G.
Before using the
Cisco Unified IP Phone models 7942G or 7962G with Cisco Unified CallManager release 4.1(3)SR5 or
later, you must install the latest firmware on all Cisco Unified CallManager servers in the cluster.
Note: If you have a Cisco Unified CallManager on a Release earlier than 4.1(3)SR5, do NOT install this firmware. You
must first upgrade your Cisco Unified CallManager to
one of the compatible releases listed in Table 1.

Please note that different versions
of the installer are needed for different Cisco Unified CallManager
releases. Cisco Unified CallManager releases
earlier than 5.0 are based on a Windows server platform. Cisco Unified CallManager release 5.0 and later are based on a Linux
server platform.
For Cisco Unified CallManager 5.0 (and later), you must do all software
installations and upgrades by using the Software Upgrades menu options. The
system can upload and process only software that Cisco Systems approved. You
cannot install or use third-party or Windows-based software applications that
you may have been using with a previous version of Cisco Unified CallManager with Cisco Unified CallManager
5.0.
The Cisco IP Phone Model
7942G/7962G Firmware version 8.5(2) is also supplied in a zip file, as an
alternative in case a Cisco Unified CallManager is
not available to load the installer program. The name of this file is: cmterm-7942_7962-sccp.8-5-2.zip.
After unzipping the firmware files,
they should be manually copied to the appropriate directory on the TFTP server.
