About This Guide

The Catalyst 2900 Series XL Installation Guide documents the hardware features of Catalyst 2900 series XL switches, also referred to as 2900 XL switches or the switches. It describes the physical and performance characteristics of switches in the series and explains how to install and troubleshoot the installation. This guide also explains how to set up a default software configuration on the switch that can be used to operate it.

Audience

This guide is for the networking or computer technician responsible for installing and configuring 2900 XL switches. We assume that you are familiar with the concepts and terminology of Ethernet and local area networking.

Organization

This guide is organized into the following chapters:

Chapter 1, "," is a physical and functional overview of the switch. It describes the switch ports, the standards they support, and the switch LEDs. Examples of how the switch could be installed suggest possible deployment strategies.

Chapter 2, "," contains the complete procedures for installing a switch on a rack, wall, table, or shelf. It also describes how to assign IP information to the switch.

Chapter 3, "Troubleshooting," describes how to identify and resolve some of the problems that might arise when you are installing a Catalyst 2900 XL switch.
