Document Objectives

This guide describes how to install and access the Cisco PIX Device Manager (PDM) software.

Audience

This guide is for network administrators who perform any of the following tasks:

Managing network security

Installing and configuring firewalls

Use this guide in conjunction with the documentation supplied in the accessory kit of your PIX Firewall unit.

"Installing PDM on a PIX Firewall" describes PDM system requirements and installation information.

"Upgrading to a New PDM Version" describes how to obtain a new copy of PDM from Cisco's online download site and to copy it to your PIX Firewall unit.

"PDM Support for PIX Firewall CLI Commands" lists the PIX Firewall CLI (command-line interface) commands and their level of PDM support.

"Using a TFTP Server" describes how to use a TFTP server to download software.

Document Conventions

Command descriptions use these conventions:

Braces ({ }) indicate a required choice.

Boldface indicates commands and keywords that are entered literally as shown.

Italics indicate arguments for which you supply values.

Examples use these conventions:

Examples depict screen displays and the command line in screen font.

Information you need to enter in examples is shown in boldface screen font.

Variables for which you must supply a value are shown in italic screen font.

Selecting a menu item (or screen) is indicated by the following convention:
