Dark fiber and CWDM solution decreases costs and increases network availability.

Article Summary:

In 2003 when Cisco Japan IT wanted to build a new data center in Tokyo for its two large business offices, the team needed a cost-effective way to interconnect the sites. Cisco Japan IT chose the combination of inexpensive dark fiber with coarse wavelength-division multiplexing (CWDM) GBICs for a low-cost, high-flexibility solution.

This optical networking case study describes how Cisco Japan IT:

  • Selected vendors and designed vendor service-level agreements
  • Built the current network
  • Used the CWDM network to add new channels for lab and other uses
