Network Outages

What’s happening

Over the past 20 months, cloud provider networks appeared to be more stable than ISPs, only contributing 5% of all outages observed compared to 95% for ISPs (even though they are equally represented in the data set).

The impact

Cloud provider networks were built out more recently than most ISP networks and lack much of the technical debt of longstanding operators, which enabled them to innovate and address issues faster.

What you can do

  • Understand local (and specific) operator practices to help you plan and more effectively communicate with your stakeholders and vendors to ensure minimal business disruption even when unforeseen traffic shifts require ISPs to make more frequent network state changes.
  • Take advantage of cloud infrastructure to quickly scale up service capacity to maintain business continuity.
