Meeting Participation

What’s happening

Nurturing inclusion and active engagement can be challenging for distributed teams and involves multiple contributing factors: the number of people attending, the duration, the format, individual personalities, and cultural trust.

The impact

An excess of virtual meetings and the cognitive load associated with them are overwhelming people. Typically, only a few people speak during meetings, and that disengagement is intensified when their active input is not encouraged or welcomed. These and other factors create meeting fatigue, employee burnout, toxic cultures, and thwart inclusion efforts.

What you can do

  • Increase awareness of participation imbalances using meeting analytics.
  • Activate tools that foster engagement and ensure everyone has a voice whether they are speaking or not, like gesture recognition, polling, Q&A or real-time transcription and translation.
  • Analyze post-meeting usage data to help individuals and managers identify engagement shortcomings.
