How do dial plan rules work on the Codian ISDN GW?

Introduction

This article relates to the Cisco TelePresence ISDN GW 3241 and Cisco TelePresence ISDN GW MSE 8321 products.

Q. How do dial plan rules work on the Codian ISDN GW?

A. The Codian ISDN GW stores two separate dial plans: ISDN to IP and IP to ISDN. For a given call direction, the dial plan list works on a 'first match' basis: the ISDN GW starts at the top of the list and works its way down until it finds a match. Then it performs the action specified in that particular rule. When troubleshooting routing problems, always check the order of the dial plan rules.

ISDN to IP

Dialing from a telephone / H.320 endpoint to an IP-based endpoint (e.g. MCU or H.323 endpoint)

1. H.320 endpoint and telephone: A single dial plan rule is sufficient to route calls from both H.320 endpoints and telephones. For Call Type select Video and for Maximum call bandwidth select 1920 kbps. Then, when a telephone call comes in, the ISDN GW only opens an audio channel at 64 kbps, but for other H.320 endpoints, it opens video and audio channels at appropriate rates

2. Connecting to an MCU auto attendant or conference:

   • To route incoming ISDN calls to a particular MCU auto attendant (or another IP address), for Call this number, enter the IP address of the MCU or endpoint

   • To route incoming ISDN calls to a particular conference on the MCU, for Call this number, enter <ip address>:<Numeric id of conference>. If the ISDN GW and MCU are registered to the same gatekeeper, then for Call this number simply enter the <E.164 number or registered Numeric ID of the conference>

3. Routing to DDI numbers: If you have a range of direct dial (DDI) numbers attached to your ISDN network, you can tailor different dial plan rules to dial out to different DDI numbers from the ISDN GW. IP to ISDN:

Dialing from an IP endpoint (MCU/Cisco Unified Communications Manager/H.323 endpoint) to an H.320 endpoint or telephone

For IP to ISDN, two dial plan rules are necessary: one to call the H.320 endpoint and the other for a telephone call.

1. Calling from an MCU without a gatekeeper: If the MCU and ISDN GW are not registered to the same Gatekeeper, then the ISDN GW must be configured as an H.323 Gateway on the MCU. Then create two dial plan rules:

   • To call an H.320 endpoint: For Called number matches, type 5 (D+) for example, for Call type select Video and for Call this number, enter $1

   • To call a telephone: For Called number matches type 6 (D+) for example, for Call type select Telephone and for Call this number, enter $1

2. Calling from an MCU with a gatekeeper: If the MCU and ISDN GW are registered to the same gatekeeper, you have to register a service prefix on the ISDN GW (e.g. 4). Then create two dial plan rules:

   • To call an H.320 endpoint: For Called number matches, type 45 (D+) for example, for Call type select Video and for Call this number, enter $1

   • To call a telephone: For Called number matches type 46 (D+) for example, for Call type select Telephone and for Call this number, enter $1
