Duo’s technology is a strategic addition to Cisco’s intent-based networking and security portfolio
SAN JOSE, Calif. - On October 1, 2018, Cisco is excited to announce the completion of its acquisition of Duo Security, a privately-held, unified access security and multi-factor authentication company headquartered in Ann Arbor, MI.
Duo’s people-centric, zero trust security model, allows secure connections to all applications (whether on premises or in the cloud) based on the trustworthiness of users and devices. Duo’s cloud-delivered technology enables IT to set and enforce risk-based, adaptive access policies and get enhanced visibility into users’ devices and activities.
In today’s multicloud era, business critical data and applications are accessed by customers, partners and employees from a multitude of locations and networks both secure and open, using company-issued and personal devices. IT’s success in delivering digital experiences such as applications for sales, customer engagement and employee productivity, requires a new networking and security architecture built for a multicloud environment.
Cisco and Duo are closely aligned in the approach of designing infrastructure for the extended enterprise where users, devices and applications are the center of the modern security architecture. Integrating our network, device and cloud security platforms with Duo’s zero trust authentication and access products, Cisco’s expansive security architecture is built to address the complex challenges that stem from hybrid and multi-cloud environments such as securing critical data as it moves from one platform or enterprise domain to another.
By delivering security capabilities from the cloud that enable organizations to base application access decisions on the trust established in user identities and the trustworthiness of their devices, Duo’s technology is a highly strategic addition to Cisco’s intent-based networking portfolio. Leveraging Duo’s frictionless, cloud-delivered capabilities, Cisco will now be able to securely connect any user to any application on any network.
Q: Why did Cisco choose to acquire Duo?
A: From a business perspective, Duo’s subscription-based SaaS product supports Cisco’s transition toward predictable recurring revenue. From a technology perspective, Duo’s technology is a highly strategic addition to Cisco’s intent-based networking, cloud and endpoint security portfolios. Duo will help extend secure access across a hybrid, multi-cloud environment with a simple, cloud-delivered service. With Duo, Cisco will enforce consistent secure access policy for network and application access. It will also let us deliver identity awareness into our cloud security portfolio for products like Umbrella and Cloudlock so Cisco customers enforce consistent, powerful cloud security policies for even greater threat protection.
Q: What security challenge does this acquisition help us address?
A: Organizations must protect today’s network and the expanding IT perimeter including mobile employees, contractors, SaaS apps, hybrid public/private clouds, and BYOD.
Attackers know that an effective way to gain illicit access to enterprise applications is compromising users’ passwords and devices (via phishing campaigns, malware, etc.). Attackers often log-in and remain undetected, as they appear to be legitimate users.
With this acquisition, we further strengthen our security portfolio with the addition of cloud-based unified access security and multi-factor authentication capabilities. Duo keeps organizations safe by verifying user identities and checking for the trustworthiness of devices, key aspects of an effective security posture.
Q: What does Duo do?
A: Duo offers unified access security and multi-factor authentication technology that verifies user and device trust and limits access to protected applications and other corporate information resources to trusted employees with trustworthy devices.
Duo’s cloud-delivered security will build on our current secure access offerings, adding the ability to manage application access based on verified, user identities and the trustworthiness of their devices.
