SAN JOSE, Calif. - On August 2, 2018 Cisco announced its intent to acquire Duo Security, a privately-held, unified access security and multi-factor authentication company headquartered in Ann Arbor, MI.

Duo’s people-centric, zero-trust security model, allows secure connections to all applications (whether on premises or in the cloud) based on the trustworthiness of users and devices.

In today’s multicloud era, business critical data and applications are accessed by customers, partners and employees from a multitude of locations and networks both secure and open, using company-issued and personal devices. IT’s success in delivering digital experiences such as applications for sales, customer engagement and employee productivity, requires a new networking and security architecture built for a multicloud environment.

By delivering security capabilities from the cloud that enable organizations to base application access decisions on the trust established in user identities and the trustworthiness of their devices, Duo’s technology is a highly strategic addition to Cisco’s intent-based networking portfolio. Utilizing Duo’s frictionless, cloud-delivered capabilities, Cisco will now be able to securely connect any user to any application on any network.

Q: What is Cisco acquiring?
A:
Cisco is acquiring Duo Security, a privately-held, unified access security and multi-factor authentication company headquartered in Ann Arbor, MI.

Q: Why did Cisco choose to acquire Duo?
A:
From a business perspective, Duo’s subscription-based SaaS product supports Cisco’s transition toward predictable recurring revenue. From a technology perspective, Cisco will integrate Duo’s modern unified access security and trusted identity capabilities throughout our intent-based networking portfolio as well as across our network, cloud, and endpoint security to provide simpler, more effective security for our customers. Duo’s products in combination with our capabilities such as Umbrella, Stealthwatch, ISE, Tetration and DNA Center position Cisco to provide an end to end zero-trust architecture.

Q: What security challenge does this acquisition help us address?
A:
Security today must protect today’s network and the expanding IT perimeter including mobile employees, contractors, SaaS apps, hybrid public/private clouds, and BYOD.

Attackers know that an effective way to gain illicit access to enterprise systems is compromising users’ passwords and devices (via phishing campaigns, malware, etc).  Attackers often log-in and remain undetected, as they appear to be legitimate users. Attackers primarily exploit known, not zero-day, vulnerabilities.

With this acquisition, we further strengthen our security portfolio with the addition of cloud-based unified access security and multi-factor authentication capabilities. This keeps organizations even safer by verifying an employee’s identity, to ensure they are who they say they are and adds more checks on the trustworthiness of devices, key aspects of an effective security posture.

Q: What does Duo do?
A:
Duo offers unified access security and multi-factor authentication technology that limits access to protected applications and other corporate information resources to trusted employees with trustworthy devices.

Today’s heterogeneous IT requires verified, consistent access to resources whether an employee is behind the firewall at the office or directly connecting to SaaS apps or the cloud from anywhere.

Duo’s cloud-delivered, zero-trust security builds on our current secure access offerings, adding the ability to manage application access based on verified, user identities and the trustworthiness of their devices.
