Cisco provides image authentication with its various IP phone protocols. Image authentication allows the phone to detect if the image has been tampered with before it is programmed into the phone. If the image fails the authentication process then the phone will reject the image. Image authentication occurs through signed files. All Cisco Unified IP Phone models 7911G and 7906G loads are signed and can only be upgraded or downgraded to other signed releases.
The 8.4(4) firmware uses signed (authenticated) files. This step improves IP phone security on the Cisco Unified IP Phone models 7911G and 7906G.
Before using the Cisco Unified IP
Phone models 7911G and 7906G with Cisco Unified CallManager
release 3.3 or later, you must install the latest firmware on all Cisco Unified
CallManager servers in the cluster.
Note: If you have a Cisco Unified CallManager on Release 3.0, 3.1, or 3.2, do NOT install this firmware. You must first upgrade your Cisco Unified CallManager to the compatible releases listed in Table 1 or Table2.

The 8.0(1) firmware
release has been made available on Cisco Unified CallManager
installation CDs; however, it will not be made available on Cisco.com due to
additional bugs filed during final testing. Cisco recommends that you instead
use the updated 8.4(4) firmware load, which is now available on Cisco.com. This
recommendation is limited to this specific firmware release and has no bearing
on any other software or firmware available on Cisco Unified CallManager CDs.
The 8.4(4) installation programs for the 7911G and
7906 G are listed below.
Note: For the Cisco Unified IP phone 7911G and 7906G, you should not add the .loads extension to the firmware version name in the Cisco Unified CallManager database.
