Cisco has acquired Composite Software
Acquisition Expands Cisco Smart Services Portfolio with Data Virtualization Software and Services.
On July 30, 2013, Cisco completed its acquisition of privately held Composite Software, a market leader in data virtualization software and services. Headquartered in San Mateo, Calif., Composite provides software technology that connects all kinds of data from across the network and makes it appear as if it's in one place. Composite will expand Cisco's Smart Services portfolio and extend our next-generation services platform by optimizing data and connecting to the infrastructure layer, which will enhance programmability and use of APIs for our customers.
Big data and cloud are drastically changing today's IT landscape. The proliferation of traditional and new data sources plus the movement of data to the cloud complicates the ability to access all data assets. This creates the need to complement traditional data warehousing with an agile business solution that provides a real-time, consolidated logical view of data.
This simplified and optimized logical view of data, from multiple sources across the network, is offered through a technique called data virtualization, which provides applications and business users with the ability to access and query all types of data as if it is in a single place.
This acquisition builds on Cisco's framework for a Unified Platform and our software services strategy with the recent acquisition of SolveDirect. Composite's data virtualization solution combined with SolveDirect's process integration platform will provide cross-domain data and workflow integration capabilities to enable real- time business insights and operations.
- Q: What is Cisco acquiring?
- A: Cisco is acquiring Composite Software, a privately held company headquartered in San Mateo, California and a market leader in data virtualization software and services.
- Q: Why did Cisco acquire Composite?
- A: As customers increase their adoption of big data, analytics, cloud and mobile, traditional enterprising data warehouses will fail to meet all of their needs. Their needs will increasingly rely on optimizing access to data where it resides, over the network, rather than moving the data to one physical location. The role of the network, and the interaction between Data Virtualization software and the network, will be essential to the next generation of data warehousing. Cisco ONE provides the ability for applications to interact with the network, both to program the network for optimal performance and to extract knowledge about the network. By combining this network knowledge and programmability with the performance of Cisco's UCS, and Composite's software and query optimization expertise, Cisco will be well positioned to provide highly differentiated capabilities to customers.
