Globe Telecom

The Company and Its Network

Globe Telecom is the leading provider of wireless communications, wire-line voice communications, data transmission, and domestic and international long distance communication service for the Philippines.  Its Internet data center (IDC) contains many Cisco hardware devices including high-end Internet routers and Cisco Catalyst® 6500 and 3550 Series switches.  The new IDC will support some 400 end users, and there are plans to add two similar data centers to support future growth.

The Product in Action

Tasked with managing this complex network is Peter Tan, Vice President of Operations in the Fixed Network group.  Tan has deployed many CiscoWorks solutions to effectively handle daily operations, including the CiscoWorks LAN Management Solution (LMS) and CiscoWorks Routed WAN Management Solution (RWAN).  However, to manage and accomplish tasks specific to the data center environment, Globe Telecom has successfully deployed CiscoWorks Hosting Solution Engine (HSE).  Globe Telecom started using the HSE in June 2002 when the IDC began its operations.  Initially, they used it to provide fault and performance data reports suchat service hits, connections, and CPU utilization.

As Tan explains, "These fault and performance reports have allowed us to proactively manage the availability of the IDC.  Also, as the data center grows, we will be able to use the unique capability of HSE to provide customer specific views.  This will enable customers to view only those devices in the data center relevant to them.  As users log in to the HSE, they can use it to monitor the devices or provision Layers 4 through 7 services."

Says Tan, "Without a scalable solution like the HSE, it would be very time consuming and challenging to support the many IDC customers.  HSE makes the job of the IDC operations team much easier.  With such a lean team, we need tools like HSE to help us and our customers monitor the IDC efficiently."

Furthermore, by operating within the highly competitive data center market, Globe Telecom has found that the implementation of HSE has been a clear competitive advantage.  Tan explains, "In the areas of fault and performance management, HSE allows us to operate the IDC more efficiently than our competitors - which results in our customers seeing a great advantage to working with Globe Telecom."
