Networks are an essential part of business, education, government, and home communications. Many residential, business, and mobile IP networking trends are being driven largely by a combination of video, social networking and advanced collaboration applications, termed “visual networking.”
The Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) is the company's ongoing effort to forecast and analyze the growth and use of IP networks worldwide.
In February 2013, Cisco released the Cisco VNI Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast, 2012 - 2017. Highlights from the updated research includes the following projections:
- By 2017, global mobile data traffic will reach 11.2 exabytes per month (134 exabytes annually); growing 13-fold from 2012 to 2017.
- By 2017, mobile video will represent 66% of all mobile data traffic.
- By 2017, 45% of global mobile data traffic will be offloaded to fixed networks.
- By 2017, tablets will account for more than 12% of global mobile data traffic.
- By 2017, 4G connections will account for 45% of global mobile data traffic.
