Cisco Unity Configuration Overview

Your installation tasks depend on the configuration of the Cisco Unity system you are installing, and on whether the system is a baseline or a component system.

This chapter contains the following sections:

Cisco Unity Configurations

There are four configurations for installing a Cisco Unity system. The following lists describe the characteristics of each type of configuration.

Voice Messaging Only

The Cisco Unity server handles only voice messages.

The Cisco Unity server is not connected to the network, so Cisco Unity cannot be integrated with Cisco CallManager.

Subscribers check messages only by phone.

Cisco Unity administration must be performed at the Cisco Unity server.

Subscribers do not have access to the Cisco Unity ActiveAssistant.

E-mail attributes, if any, and voice-mail attributes on subscriber accounts must be administered separately.

Voice Messaging with LAN Administration

The Cisco Unity server handles only voice messages.

The Cisco Unity server is connected to the network, so it has access to network utilities, such as virus checking and backup.

Subscribers check messages only by phone.

Cisco Unity administration may be performed over the network.

Subscribers have access to the Cisco Unity ActiveAssistant.

E-mail attributes, if any, and voice-mail attributes on subscriber accounts must be administered separately.

Unified Messaging with One Exchange Server

Cisco requires that anyone installing a Cisco Unity server as a unified messaging server be a Microsoft Certified System Engineer. In this configuration, the Cisco Unity server is the only Exchange server in the site.

The Cisco Unity server handles voice and e-mail messages.

The Cisco Unity server is connected to the network, so it has access to Active Directory and to network utilities, such as virus checking and backup.

Subscribers check messages by using the phone or an e-mail client.

Cisco Unity administration may be performed over the network.

Subscribers have access to the Cisco Unity ActiveAssistant.

Voice-mail and e-mail attributes on subscriber accounts may be administered from a single location by using the Cisco Unity Administrator.

The Cisco Unity Installation Guide does not provide information about installing the Cisco Unity server as an e-mail server, and technical support is not provided for e-mail.

Unified Messaging in an Existing Exchange Site

Cisco requires that anyone installing a Cisco Unity server as a unified messaging server be a Microsoft Certified System Engineer. In this configuration, the Cisco Unity server is connected to Exchange servers in the same site or in multiple sites.

For this configuration only, you do not need to install Exchange on the Cisco Unity server.

The Cisco Unity server handles only voice messages. Messages are stored on other Exchange servers.

Component and Baseline Systems

Cisco Unity can be purchased as a baseline system or as a component system. The type of system you are installing determines the installation task list that you use. (Task lists are provided in "Installing a Cisco Unity System.")

Component System

For a component system, the Cisco Unity software package is purchased from Cisco or from a Cisco reseller. The package includes all required software except Windows 2000 Server. The server, voice cards, and other components may be purchased from Cisco or a Cisco reseller, or from another vendor.

The Cisco Unity Installation Guide provides instructions for installing software on a server that has a blank hard disk. If Windows 2000 Server or other required software has already been installed, skip the corresponding Installation Guide sections.

Baseline System

A baseline system is a server that is shipped with the following software preinstalled:

Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 2

Microsoft Message Queuing 2.0

Microsoft NNTP Service

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 with Service Pack 1

Symantec pcAnywhere 10

Microsoft Outlook 2000. (This software must be removed during the Cisco Unity installation process. The Task List for a Baseline System alerts you when to do the procedure.)

The driver for the USB system key

The Cisco Unity software, other third-party software, and voice cards, if any, are not preinstalled. The Cisco Unity Installation Guide provides instructions for completing the installation of a baseline system.

When Windows 2000 was installed, the Cisco Unity server was configured as a member of a Windows 2000 workgroup.

Converting a Cisco Unity System to a Different Configuration

A Cisco Unity system can be converted from one configuration to another for selected configurations. Note that converting from either of the Voice Messaging configurations to the Unified Messaging with One Exchange Server configuration requires an upgrade to the Cisco Unity system key. For more information, contact Cisco Systems.

The following conversions are supported:

Voice Messaging Only to Voice Messaging with LAN Administration

Voice Messaging Only to Unified Messaging with One Exchange Server

Voice Messaging with LAN Administration to Unified Messaging with One Exchange Server.

Conversions to Unified Messaging in an Existing Exchange Site are not supported. To use this configuration, you must reinstall all software.
