Introduction

This document answers some frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the Cisco E-Mail Manager Mailing List functionality.

Refer to the Cisco Technical Tips Conventions for more information on document conventions.

Note: This document applies only to Cisco E-Mail Manager version 4.6.2 and later.

Q. Why do I encounter an error when I try to delete a member from the mailing list?

A. When you delete a member from the mailing list, you see this error message:

14a.gif

This error indicates that the name of the mailing list contains spaces, which Cisco E-Mail Manager currently does not validate.

In order to solve this problem, remove the mailing list completely, and create the mailing list again. Alternatively, you can rename the mailing list in the database. If you rename the mailing list, ensure that the new name does not contain any spaces.

Here is an example of how you can rename a list called "Mailing List1" to get rid of the spaces:

update mail_list set listname = 'Mailing_List1'
  where listname = 'Mailing List1';
update list_member set listname = 'Mailing_List1'
  where listname = 'Mailing List1';
commit;

Q. Why does the "To" field include three mailing addresses instead of one?

A. The To field contains: "Mailing@company.com List@company.com ListName@company.com" when you use a mailing list to send email messages. To fix this problem, check the list name, and ensure that the name does not contain spaces. If the name of the mailing list contains spaces, change the name as instructed in Why do I encounter an error when I try to delete a member from the mailing list?. Then change the tserver.properties file located in the \eMail Manager\instances\INSTANCENAME\transact folder. Search for the line "MAILING_LIST_PREFIX=Mailing\ list", and change it to "MAILING_LIST_PREFIX=", and do not enter anything after the equal sign. Restart the services to complete the fix.

Q. Why does Cisco E-Mail Manager add the wrong email address to the mailing list after I use the Add Selected to List feature?

A. Each email has another primary return address path, and Cisco E-Mail Manager uses the primary return address instead of the address in the From field. If you open the email and check the default To field, you see the address that Cisco E-Mail Manager adds instead of what you see in the queue. Either remove the unwanted email address, or open the email and add the address to the mailing list. In order to remove the unwanted email address, modify the mailing list and add the correct email address manually.

Q. How can I insert an email address from an outside source?

A. First, create a mailing list and remember its name. Then write a script to insert all the required email addresses to the database. Here is an example script that uses a Mailing List called "Mailing_List1":

Insert into list_members values ('Mailing_List1', 'name1@company.com');
Insert into list_members values ('Mailing_List1', 'name2@company.com');
Insert into list_members values ('Mailing_List1', 'name3@company.com');
Insert into list_members values ('Mailing_List1', 'name4@company.com');
Insert into list_members values ('Mailing_List1', 'name5@company.com');
