Unity Express Decode Cisco IOS Debug Prompts

Introduction

This document provides information about how to decode prompts that are played to callers from Cisco IOS debugs for Cisco Unity Express (CUE) or Cisco Unity PhraseServer debugs.

Trace is the debug utility for CUE and is used to troubleshoot a variety of issues. When the trace function is enabled, it can have a negative impact on system performance. Because of this issue, Cisco recommends that you enable trace only at the request of Cisco Technical Support in order to gather information about specific problems. For systems in the lab or in maintenance windows, the trace function can be used to troubleshoot and understand CUE behavior.

Components Used

The information in this document is based on Cisco Unity Express software and hardware.

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

Background Information

The decoder ring helps determine what the prompts indicate when you run debugs on CUE. Individuals that are familiar with Cisco IOS® Software might not be familiar with the CUE command-line interface (CLI) and powerful debug capability.

CUE includes tools that are similar in functionality, but have some important differences. In CUE, the debug command does not exist. Instead, CUE provides a diagnostic utility, invoked with the trace command, that writes messages within a kernel buffer in memory. This memory space, which can be up to 10 MB in size, is (if configured) periodically written to a local trace file (atrace.log), to a file on an external FTP server, or to both.

The configuration of traces on CUE can have a negative impact on system performance, especially when you write to a local log file that is enabled. This impact can include delays in prompts and dual-tone multifrequency (DTMF) tone response times, as well as quality problems in recorded or played audio. You should configure traces with caution.

Enable Voicemail VXML Trace

The trace voicemail vxml all command enables tracing to display DTMFs received and prompts played in response to DTMFs. This trace also displays Call-ID for differentiating different calls to voicemail and also displays voicemail telephone user interface (TUI) position.

In order to enable voicemail VXML trace, complete these steps:

  1. Use the service-module service-Engine <mod/slot> session command in order to log in to the CUE.

  2. Use the trace voicemail vxmlr all command in order to enable voicemail tracing.

  3. Use the show trace buffer long command in order to view the log.
