Q. Can Users Resend Emails and Attachments That ProtectLink Gateway Email Protection Has Blocked?

A.

If emails and attachments were blocked due to one of the conditions below, they cannot be resent.

  • One of the Email Reputation Services (ERS) databases contains the IP of the mail server sending the email and attachment.

Users cannot resend emails and attachments because ProtectLink Gateway Email Protection does not receive or store the actual email after blocking the SMTP connection.

  • The message triggered a ProtectLink Gateway Email Protection rule with a "Delete entire message" action.

Resending is not possible because ProtectLink Gateway Email Protection does not store emails that it permanently removes.

  • The message triggered a ProtectLink Gateway Email Protection rule with a "Change recipient" action.

In this situation, ProtectLink Gateway Email Protection sends the mail to a new recipient (pre-configured, usually the administrator) and prevents direct resending to the original recipient. Resending the email means the user has to manually retrieve the email from the new recipient and then resend to the original recipient.

  • The message triggered a ProtectLink Gateway Email Protection rule with a "Delete attachment" action.

Users cannot resend this because the attachment is permanently deleted.

  • The message triggered a ProtectLink Gateway Email Protection virus rule with a "Clean cleanable viruses, delete those that cannot be cleaned" action.

In this situation, ProtectLink Gateway Email Protection permanently deletes attachments if it is unable to clean the infected file.

Note: ProtectLink Gateway Email Protection cannot delete infected attachments if the entire file contains pure virus code or the virus overwrites part of the original file.
