Problem Description

Cards built with flash component ST M29F010B fail to upgrade MBUS due to software/hardware incompatibility. This causes problems on initial install and upgrade. The affected cards need to be replaced.

Background

IOS code does not properly support the ST M29F010B flash type, and as a result the flash erase operations are improperly executed. There are two failure modes, depending on the software version. See Problem Symptoms below.

Problem Symptoms

Below highlights two different problem symptoms. It is recommended that all affected cards are returned per the workaround solution.

The upgrade mbus-agent-rom is also automatically performed after the upgrade all , and will have the same result.

On 12.0(28)S, the upgrade mbus-agent-rom operation fails with rc=7.

The ROM Agent stored in the flash becomes corrupted. The card continues to run, but will later become inoperable upon card OIR, chassis power cycle, or reload with to different IOS version. At this point, hardware replacement is required.

On 12.0(30)S and later, the upgrade mbus-agent-rom operation fails with rc=5.

In this case, the ROM Agent is not corrupted by the upgrade attempt. However, the card may lock up, requiring an OIR or chassis power cycle to restore, after which the card runs again, still with down revisioned ROM Agent. Cards running with a down revisioned ROM Agent may make the router less tolerant to hardware failures.

Workaround/Solution

Workaround:

None

Solution:

Replace the affected hardware.

As of approximately April 23, 2007, no new products were manufactured with the problem component and are guaranteed to be free of this problem.

Product shipped from Service Logistics may still exhibit this problem. To ensure an RMA replacement is not affected by this problem, request an RMA coded as shown below:

Service Level: Mfg New - 3rd Bus Day NON BILLABLE

Failure Class: Administrative Request

Failure Code: Field Notice Alert

Note: Replacements fulfilled through this process typically take three business days or more to arrive on-site, therefore service level agreements do not apply to RMAs coded as shown above.

Note: Products that fall within the serial number range listed above are not affected by this problem if they have ECO E089552 or E089570 applied. See How to Identify Hardware Levels below.

How To Identify Hardware Levels

The suspect parts were shipped between the dates of December 21, 2006 and April 23, 2007. Using show diag or visual inspection, refer to the serial number and part number to confirm the part is affected:

For the OC192E/POS-SR-SC

If the serial number is in the range outlined above and the part number is identical to 800-18668-09, the part is suspect and needs replacing.

For the 4OC48E/POS-SR-SC

If the serial number is in the range outlined above and the part number is identical to 800-18672-08, the part is suspect and needs replacing.

Cards within the serial number range, with the corrective ECO applied will have a later part number, such as 800-18668-10.

The following show diag command output shows in bold where to find the serial number, and part number for reference:
