Problem Description

Under certain conditions, a platform running the 12.2(25)SW5 IOS version with IP Transfer Point (ITP) may experience a software reload with traceback information.

A caveat has been identified for this defect, bug id CSCsd62477. This caveat could potentially affect all supported ITP platforms except the 7600. The feature causing this reload is not yet supported on the 7600. The Cisco IP Transfer Point is implemented on the Cisco 2600XM Series Router (Cisco 2650XM and 2651XM), the Cisco 7200 Series Router (Cisco 7204VXR and 7206VXR), the Cisco 7301 Router, and the Cisco 7500 Series Router (Cisco 7507 and 7513).

The problem is fixed in 12.2(25)SW7 for the Short Message Service (SMS) MO Proxy feature, which performs Mobile Originated (MO) deferral of short messages to a legacy Short Message Service Center (SMSC). Upgrading to 12.2(25)SW7 or downgrading to 12.2(25)SW3a will eliminate this problem.

The the first ITP release with the problem is 12.2(25)SW4a. The problem exists in 12.2(25)SW4a, 12.2(25)SW5, and 12.2(25)SW6.

See the Workaround/Solution section additional solutions.

Background

A reload and traceback may occur when the following conditions are met:

  1. ITP is configured with SMS subsystem and is receiving SMS MO messages (SMS MO Proxy or Distributed Short Message Routing (DSMR) feature).

  2. A received SMS MO message has a destination/recipient address greater than 20 digits in length (which is a protocol violation).

Problem Symptoms

Under certain circumstances a router running ITP with the SMS option will reload with a traceback. Users may need to manually reload/reset the router to clear this condition.

Workaround/Solution

This behavior has not been reported in the 12.2(25)SW3a IOS release. Reference bug id CSCsd62477 for more information. The fix for this bug has been integrated into 12.2(25)SW7 for the SMS MO Proxy feature, which performs MO deferral of short messages to a legacy SMSC. It is recommended that customers who experience this issue should upgrade to IOS software version 12.2(25)SW7.

Other Workarounds include:

  1. Remove SMS subsystem configuration which will disable MO proxy

  2. Ensure that MSCs do not send SMS MO messages with destination/recipient addresses greater than 20 digits.

The 12.2(25)SW7 and 12.2(25)SW3a software can be found under the Early Deployment heading on the IOS Upgrade Planner (registered customers only) page.
