Problem Description

After an upgrade, the audio played through the handset of the affected Cisco Unified IP Phones is too high and exceeds specifications. This anomaly occurs when the IP Phone is loaded with the following releases:

  • 7.2(2) SCCP only

  • 8.0(1) SIP and SCCP firmware loads

  • 8.0(2) SIP and SCCP firmware loads

Background

A previously undetected software defect enables the Cisco Unified IP Phone 7911G, while running the 7.2(2) SCCP image, to provide audio volume on the handset that is too loud above the normal designed range. This same bug enables the other Cisco Unified IP Phones mentioned in this notice, while running either the 8.0(2) SIP or SCCP image, to provide audio volume over the handset that is louder than above the normal designed range for these phones. The new SR releases for all of the aforementioned firmware contain a fix that resolves this issue.

The anomaly will manifest itself immediately after the Cisco Unified IP Phone is upgraded to release 7.2(2), 8.0(1) or 8.0(2)

Problem Symptoms

The audio played through the handset of the affected unit is too loud and may startle users. While this anomaly does not present any safety hazards, the excessive volume exceeds FCC Part 68 specifications for the CP-7911G.

The CP-7941G, CP-7941G-GE, CP-7961G, CP-7961G-GE, CP-7970G and CP-7971G-GE are also subject to this anomaly. However, these Cisco Unified IP Phones do not exceed FCC Part 68 specifications when loaded with the firmware versions listed in the Problem Description section.

Workaround/Solution

Workaround:

Use the Volume Control rocker switch to reduce the handset volume. Once the volume is reduced, the problem is resolved.

Solution:

For the Cisco Unified IP Phone 7911G, upgrade to release 7.2(2)SR2 or 8.0(2)SR2. For the other phones mentioned in this document, upgrade to 8.0(2)SR1.
