Problem Description

Catalyst 6000 running CatOS images 8.3(4) through 8.3(6), 8.4(1) or 8.4(2), redundant supervisors and more than two 802.3AF Inline Power Cards fail during system boot up or HA switchover switch supervisor command.

The presence of the voice power daughter boards is sufficient to cause this issue. Phones do not need to be attached.

Background

A Catalyst 6000 running Sup720, Sup32 or Sup2 and supporting multiple Voice Daughter Board (VDB) (either WS-F6K-FE48-AF or WS-F6K-GE48-AF no others) may crash during system boot up or HA switchover.

This behavior has not been seen with just the sups themselves. The presence of the voice power daughter boards is sufficient to cause this issue. Phones do not need to be attached.

This failure was duplicated in engineering test by doing a continuous switchover.

Problem Symptoms

A system running Sup720, Sup32 or Sup2 running CatOS images 8.3(4) through 8.3(6), 8.4(1) or 8.4(2)and supporting multiple VDBs (either WS-F6K-FE48-AF or WS-F6K-GE48-AF no others) may crash during system boot up or HA switchover.

Workaround/Solution

This issue is fixed in 8.3(7) and 8.4(2a) and later revision software.

The workaround to this bug is to reset the system and insert VDB line cards one by one.
