Problem Description

Customers using Cisco's Catalyst WS-C3750-16TD-E and -S Switches may experience intermittent system reboots, loss of network connectivity and system functionality, including console port access, or an inability to power up, due to an overstressed transistor.

Background

Switch failures have exposed a deficiency related to the overstressing of a transistor device on the WS-C3750G-16TD-E and -S switches. This deficiency results in a shorter operational life for the unit, although full lifespan durations vary widely.

Problem Symptoms

Initial indications of pending failure would be:

1. Switch spontaneously reboots during high traffic periods.
2. Switch is unable to boot up.
3. Switch LEDs do not illuminate when unit is powered on.

When the unit fails, the system will become non-functional, resulting in a loss of network connectivity.

Workaround/Solution

Workaround
There is no workaround for this problem.

Solution
For customers experiencing this failure, the solution is to replace the affected unit with the regular Return Material Authorization (RMA) process.

Please first confirm that your WS-C3750G-16TD-E/S switch is affected by this problem by referring to the instructions listed in the How to Identify Affected Hardware section. Once this is confirmed, please order a hardware replacement using the standard RMA process.

How to Identify Affected Hardware

Identification using CLEI Code

If the label on the unit's back panel shows a CLEI code of COM1D10ARA or COM1D10ARB, the unit should be considered a revised unit and is the latest product version.

Any other CLEI code indicates an older revision of the unit. As an example, if a customer has a WS-C3750G-16TD-S unit and the CLEI label on the back of the switch shows a code of CNMVB00CRA, this does not match either COM1D10ARA or COM1D10ARB. This example indicates that the unit should be returned for replacement.

Identification using Motherboard Assembly Number

Units with a motherboard assembly number of 73-9143-07 or below will be affected by this problem. For example, if a customer has a WS-C3750G-16TD-E unit and the motherboard assembly number is 73-9143-05, the unit falls under the criteria of this Field Notice and should be returned for a replacement.

How to Identify Motherboard Assembly Number and CLEI Code

The motherboard assembly number can be found by looking at the show version output. An example of this output from an affected unit is shown below.

C3750G-16TD#show version | include number
Motherboard assembly number : 73-9143-05
Power supply part number : 341-0045-01
Motherboard serial number : CAT082307DN
Power supply serial number : LIT081801JU
Model revision number : A0
Motherboard revision number : A0
Model number : WS-C3750G-16TD-S
System serial number : CSG0824P07Y

The CLEI code can be obtained from the CLEI label on the back of each chassis.
