Cisco IOS Software Releases 12.2 Mainline

Field Notice: AS5400HPX Will Not Boot When Loaded with Cisco IOS® Software Releases 12.2(10) and 12.2(10a)

Revised June 21, 2002

Products Affected

  • AS5400HPX

Problem Description

Note:?The AS5400HPX platform only supports Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(2)XB images and later.

Customers have attempted to load unsupported mainline Cisco IOS software releases 12.2(10) and 12.2(10a) on AS5400HPX platforms. The AS5400HPX system will not boot when attempting to load these images. Loading these images on the AS5400HPX system will cause a catastrophic system failure. The system cannot recover from this failure.

Background

There is mechanism in ROMMON on the AS5400HPX to prevent any Pre-XB images from loading on the AS5400HPX platform. This mechanism was disabled because of a change in the Cisco IOS compiler. This allows Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2 mainline images to load on HPX systems. During the upgrade, the FPGA is down-graded. The FPGA code becomes incompatible with the hardware and the system cannot boot.

Problem Symptoms

The AS5400HPX system will not boot.

If the Cisco IOS software image has not been downloaded, determine which platform the customer is attempting to upgrade. To determine if the system is an AS5400 or AS5400HPX, issue the show version command and check the output.

Output from "show version" on the AS5400HPX platform:

Processor board ID JAE061300NW
R7000 CPU at 390Mhz, Implementation 39, Rev 3.3, 256KB L2, 8192KB L3 Cache

Output from "show version" on the AS5400 platform:

Processor board ID JAB035103P2
R7000 CPU at 250Mhz, Implementation 39, Rev 1.0, 256KB L2, 2048KB L3 Cache

If the system is loaded with Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(10) or Release 12.2(10a), the following errors will be displayed as the FPGA is downgraded during boot.

Carrier card 1 Firmware revision: 2.2
Carrier card 1 Firmware will be set to 1.0
Carrier card 1 Firmware now at 1.0
Carrier card 2 Firmware revision: 2.2
Carrier card 2 Firmware will be set to 1.0
Carrier card 2 Firmware now at 1.0
Carrier card 3 Firmware revision: 2.2
Carrier card 3 Firmware will be set to 1.0
Carrier card 3 Firmware now at 1.0
    Motherboard Firmware revision: 2.2
Motherboard Firmware will be set to 1.0
This should take less than 5 minutes
If more than 5 minutes has elapsed, please cycle power
    Motherboard Firmware now at 1.0
    Access Server will now reboot

Workaround/Solution

There is no workaround for this issue. This is a catastrophic failure. The system will not boot any release of Cisco IOS after the failed upgrade, either from a normal reload or from ROMMON mode. The chassis is totally unrecoverable after the FPGA downgrade. The customer will have to replace the motherboard and chassis using the return materials authorization (RMA) process.

The DFC cards are not affected and do not have to be replaced.
