Problem Description

In release R2.0.0 there is a 19 character Network Element (NE) name limitation that isn't validated by the Graphical User Interface (GUI). If you assign a name of 20 characters or more using the GUI, the information is saved and the system operates normally, until a Timing Communications and Control Card (TCC) side-switch is performed. When a side-switch is performed, the TCC boots with the IP address set to 0.0.0.0 or 255.255.255.255. All IP connectivity to the node is lost and, potentially, traffic is effected.

Background

This problem was discovered in the field and verified in subsequent lab testing.

Problem Symptoms

When a node is renamed and a TCC side-switch is performed, all IP connectivity to the shelf is lost. An IP address of 0.0.0.0 or 255.255.255.255 is displayed by the LED on the front panel of the Cisco ONS 15454.

Workaround/Solution

If you name a node with more than 19 characters and a TCC side-switch hasn't been performed, change the name of the NE to a name of 19 characters or less.

If a node is named with greater than 19 characters, and a TCC side-switch has been performed, and IP connectivity is lost:

  1. Connect to the craft port of the active TCC using a serial cable (RS232 DB9) to establish a TL1 session.

  2. Type ACT-USER:[TID}:userid:[CTAG]::passwd;.

  3. Type RTRV-NE:::; and take note of the information provided by the command output.

  4. Type ED-NE::::::NAME=newname;, where newname is the new Node name, following these rules:

    • Fewer than 20 characters, all alpha or combination alpha/numeric.

    • Starts with an alpha character (numeric values are not allowed in the first character).

  5. Type ED-NE::::::IPADDR=x.x.x.x;, where x.x.x.x is the IP address of the node. To activate the new IP address, the TCC switches to the standby TCC.

  6. Verify that the LED displays the correct IP address.

  7. Connect to the Cisco ONS 15454 using Cerent Management System (CMS) software and verify the following network provisioning information is correct:

    • IP Address

    • Subnet Mask

    • Default Router

This issue has been corrected in R2.0.1 and subsequent versions of the Cisco ONS 15454 software.
