Original Bulletin Information

Product Bulletin No. 2548

Cisco Systems ® announces the end-of-sale and end-of-life dates for the Cisco ® IGX 8400 Series switches. This is a two phased process; see Tables 1a and 2a for a description of the end-of-life milestones, definitions, and dates for the Cisco IGX 8400 Series.
The last day to order a Cisco IGX 8400 as a configured system (Phase 1) is July 31, 2005. This date is also the last day to order individual chassis, the network processor module (NPM), network trunk module (NTM), high-speed data module (HDM), and universal router module (URM) cards, and various other components listed in Table 1b.
The last day to order the remaining cards available for the Cisco IGX 8400 Series (Phase 2) and all other remaining components listed in Table 2b is April 30, 2006. Customers with active service contracts will continue to receive support from the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) until July 31, 2011.
Customers who desire to replace their Cisco IGX network with a next-generation ATM network are encouraged to migrate to the Cisco MGX ® 8800 Series Switch, which delivers increased capacity, lower price per port, and transparent Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) integration. Information about the Cisco MGX 8800 Series can be found at: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps1938/index.html. Table 3 provides relevant information for migrating from the Cisco IGX 8400 Series to the MGX 8800 Series.
Customers who desire to replace their Cisco IGX network with an IP solution can choose any of Cisco's routing platforms. In cases of a planned, gradual migration, customers can opt to install a new IP core network and provide IP tunnels to the Cisco IGX network as a means of transporting inter-IGX trunk traffic. Two technologies are available to customers choosing this route: Any Transport over MPLS (AToM), and Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol version 3 (L2TPv3). Information about these technologies can be found at: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6603/products_ios_protocol_group_home.html.

PROCUCT MIGRATION OPTIONS

The recommended replacement for the Cisco IGX 8400 Series is the Cisco MGX 8800 Series (Table 3). The Cisco MGX 8850 Advanced ATM Multiservice Switch enables delivery of a complete portfolio of differentiated service offerings while scaling from DS0 to OC-48c/STM-16 speeds. In comparison with the Cisco IGX 8400 Series, the Cisco MGX 8800 Series delivers:

• Greater network scalability

• Higher port densities for all types of services

• Greatly improved price per port for all types of services

• Integration of high-performance MPLS services
