EOS/EOL Annoucement For The Cisco Catalyst OS Release 5.x

Cisco Systems® announces the end-of-sale and end-of life dates for the Cisco Catalyst OS Release 5.x for the Catalyst 6000/6500, 5000/5500 & 4000/4500 Series Switches. The last day to order the affected product is May 30, 2004. Customers with active service contracts will continue to receive support from the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) as shown in Table 1 in EoL product bulletin. Table 1 describes the end-of-life milestones, definitions, and dates for the Cisco Catalyst OS Release 5.x for the Catalyst 6000/6500, 5000/5500 & 4000/4500 Series Switches. Table 2 lists the images affected by this announcement.

End of Software Maintenance Releases Date:
OS SW

The last date that Cisco Engineering may release any final software maintenance releases or bug fixes. After this date, Cisco Engineering will no longer develop, repair, maintain, or test the product software.

Last Date of Support:
OS SW

The last date to receive service and support for the product. After this date, all support services for the product are unavailable, and the product becomes obsolete.

PRODUCT MIGRATION OPTIONS

Customers are encouraged to migrate to either:
Cisco Catalyst OS Release 6.4 or later, which has general deployment (GD) status. To achieve GD status, a release must meet rigid stability criteria, which includes defect arrival rate thresholds and a customer feedback survey. In addition, CatOS Release 6.4 also provides MIST, L2 traceroute, uplink guard, BPDU filtering, 802.1x, Dynamic VLANs among other features.
Cisco Catalyst OS Release 7.6 or later. The 7.x train is currently open to new feature addition. Moving to CatOS Release 7.6 or later adds support for the Catalyst 6503, 10/100/1000 interfaces, L4-7 Service Modules and a rich SW feature set that includes 802.3ad, 802.1s, 802.1x enhancements, IGMPv3 among others.
Cisco Catalyst OS Release 8.2 or later (Sup1 on the Catalyst 6500 only. Catalyst 4500 supports 8.2(x)GLX only). The 8.x train is currently open to new feature addition. (mention specific sup) For the Sup1 on the Catalyst 6500, moving to CatOS Release 8.2 or later adds a rich feature set - IEEE power (802.3af) and new 96-port 10/100 line card among others.
Note:    Please check the release notes for supported Supervisors and memory requirements. All Supervisors are not supported with all releases.
Customers are encouraged to consider migrating from the Catalyst 5000/5500 to the Catalyst 6500 or 4500 Series Switches
Table 2 lists the images affected by this announcement. Note that these are images and not part numbers. The X-X-X designates specific numbered releases-all images in the Cisco Catalyst OS Release 5.x code train are affected by this announcement.
