Cisco Systems® announces the end-of-sale and end-of life dates for the End-of-Sale Announcement for Multilayer Switch Feature Card. The last day to order the End-of-Sale Announcement for Multilayer Switch Feature Card is February 28, 2002. Customers with active service contracts will continue to receive support from the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) as shown in Table 1 of the EoL bulletin. Table 1 describes the end-of-life milestones, definitions, and dates for the End-of-Sale Announcement for Multilayer Switch Feature Card. Table 2 lists the product part numbers affected by this announcement.

End-of-Life Announcement Date

The date the document that announces the end of sale and end of life of a product is distributed to the general public.

September 6, 2001

End-of-Sale Date

The last date to order the product through Cisco point-of-sale mechanisms. The product is no longer for sale after this date.

February 28, 2002

Last Date of Support:

The last date to receive service and support for the product. After this date, all support services for the product are unavailable, and the product becomes obsolete.

Customers are encouraged to migrate to MSFC2, which quadruples the control plane and software forwarding performance. MSFC2 is a daughter card that can be ordered on the Catalyst 6000 Supervisor 1A (requires the PFC card) or the Supervisor 2. It combines the benefits of Cisco IOS® Software with the performance of the Catalyst 6000 to support a broad array of features. MSFC2 adds the following enhancements to the features already offered by the MSFC:
  • Four times the control plane and forwarding performance of the MSFC
  • Support for Error-Correcting Code (ECC) DRAM with option to upgrade to 256 or 512 MB
  • Full Internet routing-table support
  • Support for 1000 terminated virtual LANs (VLANs)
  • Field-replaceable unit for Supervisor Engine 1A already equipped with MSFC
  • Enhanced Web Cache Control Protocol Version 2 (WCCPv2) and Cisco IOS server load balancing (SLB) performance
  • Enhanced multicast performance
