Cisco UCS X-Series: meeting today’s needs and tomorrow’s challenges

Historically, IT managers have had to invest in a separate infrastructure to drive each of their enterprise applications, databases, and other workloads. Each system offers value, but the lack of consistency consumes IT resources, raises costs, and prevents moving workloads between systems when required.

The Cisco UCS X-Series meets this challenge. The Cisco UCS X-Series provides functionalities of both blade and rack servers by offering compute density, storage capacity, and expandability in a single system, embracing a wide range of workloads in your data center. It delivers a single chassis that can house 2-socket and 4-socket compute nodes each configured to specific application requirements. And each server is managed by Cisco Intersight to offer setup and security consistency and the capability to move higher priority workloads to help ensure availability. GPU nodes are also supported for graphic intensive workloads such as AI/ML or VDI.

The Cisco UCS X-Series, initially sized for today, can add compute nodes and GPU nodes to address unforeseen challenges yet not require additional IT staff training, cabling, rack space, or a new systems tool to manage. It is a consistent platform that can address almost any type of application your team is asked to support.

Benefits

Consistent infrastructure: one flexible platform to house your enterprise application, database, big data, VDI, and related workloads.

Improved performance: 4th Generation Intel® Scalable processors can replace a higher number of older processors housed in outdated architectures.

Improved sustainability: lower the energy required to drive enterprise workloads when comparing fully loaded Cisco UCS® X-Series with eight or more rack servers.

Space saving: a single Cisco UCS X9508 Chassis is 7RU and can hold eight 2-socket compute nodes, replacing up to 16RU of rack servers (2RU x eight servers).

Improved cable management: Cisco UCS X-Series, with incremental compute nodes, does not require additional cabling compared to rack servers.

Consistent system architecture with Cisco UCS X-Series

Initially, the Cisco UCS X-Series and compute nodes will be configured to meet specific workloads, often rehosting them from an outdated system. Empty node bays are available at any time to take on additional workloads or expand resources for current assignments. The result is more possibilities to address the future, including:

Adding large NVMe drives to current nodes to expand capacity.

Adding identical Cisco UCS X210c M6 and or Cisco UCS X210c M7 compute nodes for Oracle RAC.

Adding Cisco UCS X440p PCIe Nodes to support new power users for VDI.

Adding Cisco UCS X410c M7 Compute Nodes to meet new big-data challenges or in-memory databases.

Computer vendors have consistently tried to sell their latest server solution for every workload your team needs to run. This made for great sales for the vendor, but added to your management and budget headaches. Now is the time to change direction. The Cisco UCS X-Series is the consistent architecture for each of your many applications and brings sanity to your IT operations.
