Cisco provides image authentication with its various IP phone protocols. Image authentication allows the phone to detect if the image has been tampered with before it is programmed into the phone. If the image fails the authentication process then the phone will reject the image. Image authentication occurs through signed files. All Cisco 7940 and 7960 IP Phone loads 5.0 and newer are signed and can only be upgraded or downgraded to other signed releases.
The P00308000500 firmware uses signed (authenticated) files. This step improves IP phone security on the Cisco IP Phone models 7940 and 7960.
Note: For the Cisco IP phones 7940 and 7960, you should not add the extension of .sbn or .bin to the firmware version name in the Cisco CallManager database.
If you are using the Cisco IP Phone 7914 Expansion Module, you must upgrade the Expansion Module to firmware release S00105000200 before you install the 8.0(5) Cisco IP Phone 7960/7940 phone load. The installation program is named cmterm-7914-sccp.5-0-2.exe (or cmterm-7914-sccp.5-0-2.cop for CallManager Release 5.0 and later), and is available on CCO in the same location as the installer for the 8.0(5) software.
Perform the following procedure:
Table 1: Cisco IP Phone Models 7940/7960 Firmware Loads
Cisco IP Phone Model CallManager Version Executable on Software Page MD5 hash 7940 and 7960 5.0 and later cmterm-7940-7960-sccp.8-0-5.cop eaad91f9c298d25a5642ea3d1cb73183 7940 and 7960 5.0(4) and later cmterm-7940-7960-sccp.8-0-5.cop.sgn ee74d09bf49c0bd16d7b1c4a87e15c4b 7940 and 7960 earlier than 5.0 cmterm-7940-7960-sccp.8-0-5.exe 35a15763ec58fd6ea2d38993194b8e7e
Please note that different versions of the installer are needed for different CallManager releases. Cisco CallManager releases earlier than 5.0 are based on a windows server platform. For CallManager release 5.0 and later are based on a Linux server platform.
For Cisco CallManager 5.0, you must do all software installations and upgrades by using the Software Upgrades menu options. The system can upload and process only software that Cisco Systems approved. You cannot install or use third-party or Windows-based software applications that you may have been using with a previous version of Cisco CallManager with Cisco CallManager 5.0.
The Cisco IP Phone Model 7940/7960 Firmware version 8.0(5) is also supplied in a zip file, as an alternative in case a Cisco CallManager is not available to run the executable installer program. The name of this file is cmterm-7940-7960-sccp.8-0-5.zip.
After unzipping the firmware files, they should be manually copied to the appropriate directory on the TFTP server.
