Problem Description:

Due to image size increase, router fails to boot during upgrade and will reboot continuously with the message mount package service fail error in console. Upgrade Instructions:

Booting in consolidated binary mode

       I.          For the consolidated binary image, ROMMON must be manually upgraded using the following command:

upgrade rom-monitor filename bootflash: asr920igp-15_6_43r_s_rommon.pkg all

II.          Once the ROMMON is upgraded, the binary image boots successfully in the router.

Instructions to perform ROMMON upgrade are available at:

Note: As an alternative, boot the image in sub-package mode to upgrade to Cisco IOS XE Amsterdam 17.3.1. This mode automatically upgrades the ROMMON version to 15_6_43r_s during bootup. This workaround is not applicable to devices running with 15.6(9r)S rommon version.

Booting in sub package mode

       I.          Copy the Cisco IOS XE Amsterdam 17.3.1 binary and expand it to configure packages.conf.

II.          Set the boot variable to packages.conf and reload the router.

III.          Auto-ROMMON upgrade to version 43r occurs on bootup resulting in successful upgrade to Cisco IOS XE Amsterdam 17.3.1.
