Firmware Versions 8.5(3) for Cisco IP Phone Models 69216941 and 6961

The 8.5(3) firmware image within the installation program supports the Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP) for the following Cisco IP Phone models:

This firmware version is supported on Cisco Unified CallManager Release 7.1.2 and higher.

Cisco Unified CallManager Release 7.1.3 and higher has built in support for 8.5(3) release.

If you are using Cisco Unified CallManager Release 7.1.2, you need to install the QED, phone firmware as listed below.

If you are using Cisco Unified CallManager Release 7.1.3, you do not need to install the QED, phone firmware as listed below.

The QED Load

6921, 6941 and 6961 are newly released phone models. Their device information is not built into Cisco Unified CallManager release 7.1.2. Before using the Cisco Unified IP Phone models 6921, 6941 and 6961 with Cisco Unified CallManager release 7.1.2, you must install the QED on the Cisco Unified CallManager publisher in the cluster.

The 8.5(3) QED for the 6921, 6941 and 6961 are listed below.

The Firmware Load

Before using the Cisco Unified IP Phone models 6921, 6941 and 6961 with Cisco Unified CallManager release 7.1.2, you must install the latest firmware on all Cisco Unified CallManager servers in the cluster.

The 8.5(3) installation programs for the 6921, 6941 and 6961 are listed below.

Downloading the QED load and firmware load

Perform the following procedure:

Step 1 Go to the following URL: http://tools.cisco.com/support/downloads/go/Redirect.x?mdfid=278875240

Step 2 Log in to the Tools and Resources Download Software page.

Step 3 Choose the IP Telephony folder by clicking +.

Step 4 Choose IP Phones > Cisco Unified IP Phones 6900 Series.

Step 5 Choose your phone type.

Step 6 Choose 8.5(3) under the Latest Releases folder.

Step 7 Download the files listed in Table 1 and Table 2.

Installing the QED load and firmware load

For Cisco Unified CallManager 7.1.2, you must do all software installations and upgrades by using the Software Upgrades menu options. The system can upload and process only software that Cisco Systems approved.

  1. Using your web browser, login to the Cisco Unified Operating System Administration web page
  2. Under the Software Upgrades menu, select Install/Upgrade.
  3. Fill in the appropriate values in the Software Location section for the file you downloaded above, and click Next.
  4. In the Options/Upgrades drop-down box, select the file you downloaded above, and click Next.
  5. In the File Checksum Details box, verify you have selected the correct firmware and the MD5 has the correct value, click Next.
  6. Check that you received a Success message.

Restarting the Cisco Tftp service

After the QED load and firmware load are installed, the Cisco tftp service needs to restart.

  1. Using your web browser, login to the Cisco Unified Serviceability web page
  2. Under the Tools menu, select Control Center - Feature Services.
  3. In the CM Services section, click the Cisco Tftp radio button
  4. Click the restart icon on the top of the page.  

Cisco IP Phone Model 6921/6941/6961 Alternate Firmware format

The Cisco IP Phone Model 6921/6941/6961 Firmware version 8.5(3) is also supplied in a zip file, as an alternative in case a Cisco Unified CallManager is not available to run the executable installer program. The name of this file is cmterm-6921_6941_6961-sccp.8-5-3-0.zip.

After unzipping the firmware files, they should be manually copied to the appropriate directory on the TFTP server.
