A new video on demand on data center consolidation and data management explores how Cisco IT used the Data Center Mobility Manager tool to successfully consolidate two data centers into a new location in Bangalore, India, with no impact on operational capability.
Cisco MDS Data Mobility Manager is a storage area network (SAN), fabric-based software feature that enables data center managers to move blocks of data from a source device to a destination device. Such movement is typically needed to address array lease expiration events, capacity planning, and implementation of tiered storage strategies. With its transparent insertion capability, Cisco MDS Data Center Mobility Manager allows administrators to complete data movement without any configuration changes to the host, SAN, or array. Data movement can be completed with minimal disruption to the application, and without the need for support from systems, database, and applications administrators.
“Data Center Mobility Manager is very significant because each year Cisco upgrades a third of its storage, which normally creates 12 to 14 hours of downtime for our clients,” says Sidney Morgan, senior IT manager. “Through cross-functional effort, Cisco did the migration without any downtime, which greatly affected our bottom and top lines,” says Morgan.
“The key goal to migrate the data from a array which is not under virtualization control to a array under virtualization control clearly expands Cisco’s virtualization strategy,” says Kumar Ramachandra-Rao, a member of the Technical Staff in Cisco IT.
