Related Cisco IOS Releases

  • Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1CA is based on Cisco IOS 11.1.
  • Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1(472) and 11.1(5) are the first special and maintenance releases for Cisco IOS 11.1CA.
  • Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1CA synchronizes all software defects from each Cisco IOS 11.1 maintenance release and interim build.

Product/Feature Integration

New products and features will be integrated into each maintenance release.

Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1(18)CA is the last maintenance release allowed to have new products/features integrated. For more information, see the following pages:

Maintenance Releases

Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1CA follows the Cisco IOS 11.1 maintenance release cycle. It was originally a 7-week release model and is now a 13-week cycle as of Cisco IOS 11.1(18). The 13-week maintenance cycle will release even-numbered releases only. This 13-week release cycle was created to meet the needs of Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1CC.

Interim Builds

Interim builds are not recommended and are not fully tested.

7-week maintenance cycle: Three interim builds are built every other week between maintenance releases. Only odd-week interims will be built (for example, Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1(15.1)CA, (15.3) (15.5)).
13-week maintenance cycle: Two interim builds are built every three weeks (for example, interim build .1 and .2).

Maintenance Release Synchronization Points

To help maintain the Cisco IOS Software migration path, Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1CA has synchronized the following maintenances into other Cisco IOS trains. Hardware and software products and features supported and/or previous maintenance will be supported in the synchronized train maintenance.

From Synchronied to
Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1(5)CA through 11.1(7)CA Cisco IOS Software Release 11.2(5)P
Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1(8)CA through 11.1(9)CA Cisco IOS Software Release 11.2(7)P
Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1(1)CA through 11.1(20)CA Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(1)
Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1(17)CA Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1(17)CC

Recommended Migration

Customer type The recommended upgrade path is
ISP Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1CC, 12.0S
Large Enterprise Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1CC, 12.0T, 12.0S
Enterprise Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0, 12.0T

The recommended migration path is not very straightforward. Look into the hardware, protocols, and features used along with software defects to verify that the above recommendation will work for each unique network.

Year 2000 (Y2K) Compliant

Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1CA is Y2K compliant. Development testing has integrated the standard Y2K test script into each maintenance test.

General Deployment (GD) Plan

Although not general practice, customer demand has obliged Cisco Systems to start a GD certification program for Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1CA. Cisco IOS 11.1CA will achieve GD certification for the Cisco 7200, 7500, and RSP7000-based 7000 platforms. The release is planned for GD before the end of 1998.

Life Cycle

A detailed plan is in progress.

Unfortunately, the Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1CA train, although rich in hardware support, is weak in features as compared to Cisco IOS 11.2. This may cause some confusion and frustration to customers forced to use Cisco IOS Software Release 11.1CA in order to get support for newer port adapters. However, by using Cisco IOS 11.1CA, the customer is denied some new features such as VIP2-50 support for Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP) on ATM LAN emulation (LANE).
