Cisco migrates fiber traffic to IP network and network video recorders to data center.

Article Summary:

The Cisco Safety and Security group monitors more than 2600 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at 300-plus Cisco facilities worldwide. Previously, this surveillance system was maintained on a separate fiber network and digital video recorder server farm. The group saved money, improved security, and freed up resources by migrating the recorders to Cisco IT data centers moving from private fiber to the corporate IP LAN and WAN.

This security case study describes:

  • Additional benefits of migrating to CCTV over IP, including significantly lower storage and server requirements
  • The criteria used for the new CCTV over IP system
  • The CCTV over IP architecture and how video is captured, stored, and retrieved
