ASTRID centralises IT and saves management costs

Diegem, 30 September 2015

ASTRID, the telecommunications network manager for the Belgian emergency and security services, is centralising its main IT applications in two data centres. ICT partner Proximus will install three clusters of FlexPod Data Centre systems from Cisco and NetApp to enable this. Two of these server clusters are active, with the third operating as a backup. ASTRID wants to improve its service provision and reduce IT management costs with this centralisation project worth €10m.

Amongst other things, ASTRID provides the control room computer support application for managing emergency calls to provincial and other dispatch centres in our country. The control room software requires a lot of computer power for maximum responsiveness, which is why the system currently runs locally in the provincial offices.

“Centralising the systems in powerful data centres means ASTRID can simplify maintenance and so reduce its management costs. The provincial dispatchers will now connect to the central data centres and control room application via ASTRID’s backbone network,” says Bruno Antoine, IT & Infrastructure Program Manager for ASTRID.

Proximus is installing three FlexPods in total, with ten servers in each FlexPod. This will provide enough capacity to run other services alongside the control room application for affiliated organisations.

A new version of the dispatching software in 2016
The central infrastructure must be ready by the end of this year, with installation in the eleven provincial centres taking place in the course of 2016. ASTRID will then also launch a new version of its dispatching software.

A FlexPod Data Centre system has been specially designed for centralised IT applications in large organisations and provides processing power (servers), computer network management (switches) and data storage in a single system. The components are perfectly matched with each other so installation, management and maintenance is simpler and more affordable.

ASTRID is the operator of the national radio communications, paging and dispatching network designed for emergency and security services in Belgium. ASTRID enables the police, the fire services, emergency medical services and other organisations involved in public safety to improve both internal and interdisciplinary communications. By establishing a reliable and transparent link between users, ASTRID aims to promote the smooth running of operations and the safety of users in the field and thus contribute to the safety and protection of the population as a whole.
