Building the smart cities of the future

smartcity_expo

We believe a smart city can make urban living better and it’s this viewpoint that we’re taking into CityVerve, the Internet of Things (IoT) smart city demonstrator project, funded by Innovate UK and focused on transforming Manchester. The project is bringing together the brightest minds and pioneering use of IoT technologies, where Cisco and 21 other partners are creating a commercial and replicable model for smart cities

Building this smart city will take prudent planning, trailblazing IoT technologies and a collective desire for ongoing collaboration.

Road

Manchester Science Partnerships – Collaboration is essential for innovation, that’s why Manchester Science Partnerships will run CityVerve open calls and events offering challenges, opportunities and APIs to innovators from all walks of life, with an incubation programme run from Mi-IDEA.

Road

Health and Social Care - Central Manchester NHS Foundation Trust and other CityVerve partners will use Internet of Things technologies such as wearables and local sensors to help patients stick to their medication and increase physical activity

Road

University of Manchester - The University is helping us to determine what should (and shouldn’t) be deployed in a smart city, including what’s viable for mass smart city deployments.

Road

Cultural Institutions – CityVerve will reignite the connections that turn a neighbourhood into a community through technology, by creating a community social platform and art commissions that will bring to life and animate the IoT.

Road

Oxford Road
Oxford Road runs through the centre of Corridor Manchester, which is the location for CityVerve. Travel and transport is a key theme and we will implement Talkative Bus Systems that will operate as WiFi hot spots and intelligent digital signage. Sensor technology will also enable live demand planning and traffic routing.

Road

Energy & Environment – Citylabs was the first building in the project to be connected to the Internet of Things, enabling us to receive a constant stream of data from the heating, cooling and ventilation systems, energy, water and gas meters. Sensors will also measure CO2 levels, occupancy and movement inside the building. Outside of building, air quality monitoring will enable citizens to better manage respiratory illnesses
