Avoid playing security catch-up

What if you could see the future? How would you defend against adversaries?

2018 security report highlights attack strategies and obstacles to defence

How ready and resilient is your organization to defend against security threats? The Cisco 2018 Security Capabilities Benchmark Study offers insights from over 3600 chief security officers (CSOs) and security operations (SecOps) managers across 26 countries. The report reveals adversaries are:

  • taking self-propagating malware to unprecedented levels of sophistication and impact.
  • becoming more adept at evasion—and weaponizing cloud services and other technology (such as encryption) used for legitimate purposes
  • exploiting undefended gaps in security, many of which stem from the Internet of Things (IoT) and use of cloud services.

The report shows how IT leaders can make strategic security improvements by adhering to common best practices, which:

  • reduce exposure to emerging risks
  • slow attackers’ progress
  • provide more visibility into the threat landscape.

For example: 32 percent of breaches in 2017 affected more than half of respondents’ systems. The increase in breaches of this scale (up more than 100% since 2016) illustrates the downstream effects of attacks across the extended enterprise (for example in supply chain)

The study is part of the Cisco 2018 Annual Cybersecurity Report, which illustrates how obstacles to adopt advanced security processes vary across the Europe, Middle East, Africa and Russia (EMEAR) region:

  • In Germany, compatibility issues with legal systems were the top concern
  • In the UK, competing priorities were seen as the biggest obstacle
  • In France, Italy, Russia, Spain, other European countries, Middle East, Africa, budget constraints were the obstacle.
