Cisco Equipment Used To Implement Wireless Services in MMU

Cyberjaya, April 9 Illustrating the growing need for students to not only be IT literate but be more IT savvy, MULTIMEDIA University (MMU) has implemented an extensive upgrade of its network infrastructure, making it the most advanced university in Malaysia.

The university is in the midst of implementing network infrastructure upgrades that encompasses security, wireless services, and IP telephony, among others. The university has also migrated its Ethernet network from one based on ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) that functioned at 622 megabit per second (Mbps) to 10GE. The new 10GE (Gigabit Ethernet) network will have sufficient capacity for current as well as future requirements.

We needed a scalable network infrastructure to cater for converged data, video and voice offerings to the students as well as the lecturers. This, in turn, meant that we had to increase bandwidth to support the new intended offerings, said Madam Lee Moey Ling, Head of CITS, MMU. CITS, MMU worked with Mesiniaga and Cisco, the awarded vendor, to implement the necessary network infrastructure upgrades.

The increased speed will provide faster access that will translate into increased productivity. Complementing this speed will be the addition of more wireless access points, extending coverage to more parts of the campus.

We have 40 new wireless locations in the newly established buildings. The library, all meeting rooms and even the cafeterias as well as the food court have wireless access now, said Syazwan, the project leader.

Multimedia University, which was launched in 1999, was built on the vision to drive the Multimedia Super Corridor. As such, the higher learning institution needs to ensure that it continuously upgrades its offerings to students in line with technological advancements.

Madam Lee added that the upgrade is also in line with the Malaysian Government s push for the development of first class thinkers. This is MMU s way of contributing to the country and its service industry.

The complete installation of the network infrastructure will be completed by the end of this year. Upon completion, the university s network infrastructure will be capable of supporting future technologies as it will become Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) enabled. The IPv6, also known as the Next Generation Internet Protocol, provides a platform for new Internet functionality that will be required in the near future.
